The 170gr CF bullet from Lehigh Defense has a very interesting feature. It is a machined brass bullet with a .17 caliber bullet pressed into its hollowpoint. I couldn't wait to test these.
This factory loaded round came up a little short on velocity from my Handi Rifle (798.5fps avg), but Lehigh wanted me to test it anyway. I think this would make a good coyote round as is, but it would be interesting to see what this would do if pushed 200fps faster. They would also do a number on a deer's neck, if that is a shot you're comfortable taking.
Note that machined brass bullets are especially sensitive to variations in bore diameter because they don't extrude the same as copper or lead. So, what I see for accuracy or velocity is more likely to be different for other barrels than conventional bullets.

Re: Lehigh Defense's 170gr Controlled Fracturing Subsonic
I like the idea of the round, and the results looked impressive. That said, I have a few concerns about this. It's going out of the barrel (16" barrel) pretty slow, so it will be even slower in a semi action or SBR. The round itself is somewhat pre-fragmented so the thoughts of stuck rounds as well as breaking up and/or key holing in the suppressor would be a concern of mine. These are 170gr "Defense" rounds that are subsonic, so these shouldn't cycle a semi-action. The round is great if you want to be quiet, but if you need it as a defense round your going to want something a bit heavier that cycles the action.

Suprisingly, it cycled the action of my 8" SBR with a 762-SDN-6 just fine. That's what I used to shoot the groups.
I have yet to hear a convincing argument for using subsonics for self-defense when I can use full power ammunition, suppressed or not. These are hunting rounds, in my view.
That said, I can appreciate the fact that most won't pay $55 per 20rds for this kind of performance. As you will soon see, the 186gr CF round does a lot better.

If 170gr @ 800fps is cycling, I'd be interested in knowing what powder they are using.

Crazy, right? I never would've guessed it. This same rifle won't cycle Remington 220gr without a suppressor, so it's not like I'm overgassed.Whispering_Thunder wrote:If 170gr @ 800fps is cycling, I'd be interested in knowing what powder they are using.
The challenge for them is creating a load that has consistent velocities in different rifles. These tested faster in their M&P15 300 BLK than in my Handi Rifle, but it seems that machined brass is very sensitive to variations in bore diameter.

Pretty Crazy, sounds like its tight in the bore causing the loss of velocity and increase in backpressure. I'd be interested in seeing how well a mag loaded to full capacity feeds.Crazy, right? Velocity numbers are from my 16" Handi Rifle. My 8" Noveske barreled SBR is more accurate, so I do my groups with that and my chrono'ing with the Handi.Lead_Whisperer wrote:Pretty Crazy, sounds like its tight in the bore causing the loss of velocity and increase in backpressure.
