I ran 200 rounds today; Mostly went much better, although I still had a few primers that either didn't seat, or seated incorrectly. I have traced this back to brass casings whose primer pocket needed to be swagged. It's consistent now - if there is any resistance in seating the primer, I check the case, and 100% of the time, it has a red ring around the primer pocket. Once swagged, the primer seats without issue. Probably only doing 200 per hour or less, given these minor issues..
I'm surprised that no one suggested getting lights for the 650. Pretty sure I'm going to pick up this:
http://inlinefabrication.com/collection ... dillon-650
So a few things 'annoy' me right now, if ppl have any suggestions...
1) When starting, you have to charge the primer wheel with 6 pulls.. Annoying..
2) Without a case feeder (or a helper!), you can quickly get into a rhythm which causes one to lose track of how many shell casings are available...
3) When the low primer buzzer goes off, roughly how many primers are left? At least the 6 from issue #1; but there appears to be a few more than that.
4) Is there a way to reverse the shell plate? Or is it better to remove shells manually that have issue? For instance, If the primer doesn't seat in station 2, the cartridge in station 1 doesn't get pushed in to the shell plate all the way. But I don't notice that until I size/deprime, at which point we are 'past the point of no return'.
One of the recommendations that was given to me when I first started reloading was to run graphite through the powder funnel. This helps seal up and 'lubricate' everything appropriately. The amount of spilled powder was virtually eliminated. I'm not getting significant powder leakage, but was wondering if it's worth doing with the 650.
I haven't had a powder drop issue since I tighted the plastic wing nut. The manual only says 'some compression' on the spring. So I had very minimal compression. The shell plate is set correctly, and yeah, I found out the hard way about the set screw....
I perused Brian Enos's site - good info to be sure!
Keep the ideas coming!

Last reply on page 1 and first reply on page 2 both suggested lights.Sithlord wrote:I'm surprised that no one suggested getting lights for the 650.

It takes a few seconds to cycle the rotary primer disc, I don't consider that annoying at all.Sithlord wrote:1) When starting, you have to charge the primer wheel with 6 pulls.. Annoying..
That is why it is highly recommended to get a case feeder with the XL 650.Sithlord wrote:2) Without a case feeder (or a helper!), you can quickly get into a rhythm which causes one to lose track of how many shell casings are available...
It differs whether you are using small or large primers. You have eight (or nine if you haven't seated the current primer) in the rotary primer disc and another seven or eight in the tube I believe when using small primers.Sithlord wrote:3) When the low primer buzzer goes off, roughly how many primers are left? There is no good way to reverse the shell plate IMO. You need to make sure you have a fully seated primer before continuing. If the case in station #1 isn't located properly because you haven't properly primed the case in #2. You need to stop at the neutral position, remove the case at station #2 and inspect why (e.g., the case still has a dead primer, it needs to be swaged and/or the live primer is out of round or damaged).Sithlord wrote:4) Is there a way to reverse the shell plate? 200 rounds is just scratching the surface, when you have done 1,000 rounds you are finally getting started, 10,000 rounds and you will have a much better idea on how the machine runs.
Re: Dillon XL 650 Accessories Recommendations
There's an easy solution to #1, I leave primers and powder in the press at all times. It makes start up a lot easier and there's no time wasted running the press dry. When I start up again, I shake the powder funnel to settle any powder after a fresh fill, load more primers, and go to work. When I'm finished loading, I take a bullet and flip it upside down and place it in the brass on station #3 and leave the ram in the down position. Works for me!
I would also recommend a fluorescent light. I picked something similar to this one. It throws a lot more light on the press and work bench than the other "press lights" I tried. And it's a lot cheaper to boot. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia-Lig ... /203081577

Ok guys, I have my XL650 set up for .223 right now so what else do I need to run 300blk on it. I know the case feeder plate doesn't work, other than that what do I need to order?

Enter the calibers you have and the caliber you want and it will tell you the parts you need. It will tell you to use the AK powder funnel (part number 13015) which works fine, but if you will be reloading any cast lead or coated cast lead you will want the 30 carbine powder funnel instead (powder funnel C, part number 13564). Powder funnel C will bell the mouth of the case, the AK will not. I use the Lee Factory Crimp Die in station 5 to remove the bell.
