90 Gr XTP Sub load using Unique ?

Post by kscoggins »

Anybody have a load recipe I can use to get me in the ballpark?

I have a Savage 16" 300blk bolt gun and want to make some 90gr xtp loads for it.

I cant find Trailboss anywhere and have seen where people have recommended Unique for light grain single shot subs.

Just hoping somebody may have a proven safe starting point.

I will be using some once fired 300blk Gemtech or Nosler brass for the loads and CCI 400 primers.

Thanks in advance.

Quoting me from another thread:

Finally found a 90gr XTP Unique load that my CVA Scout likes. It took a bunch of messing around but I played around with different powder weights and length till I got it. All the groups below are 3.4gr Unique (Chrono'ed at 964fps) with different lengths except the shortest two, where one of those got run thru the Lee FCD set at 1/4 turn. Looks like the crimp helped so I may load up some at 1.647 COAL and hit them with the FCD.

Interestingly, my rifle shoots 5 different bullets to center except these. It shoots them 2" right with every load. I'm gonna load up a bunch and rezero my scope to hit POA at 50yds.

Here's mine:
90 grain XTP
4.4 Unique
COAL 1.74
Converted Range pick ups
CCI 400
No crimp
1001fps average. RARR suppressed.
My groups at 50yds were at 1". Also, my POI was nearly identical at that same range with my 208 AMAX load for that same rifle.

My buddy dropped by to try out his new Silencerco Omega 7.62 and we shot some of my XTPs thru it. Here's the video. The slo-mo on his phone messed with the sound but you can tell his voice is as loud as the shot. The shot actually sounds like a low cough--not even a hard cough.

The bullet hitting the jug in the second one was 3X louder than the shot at the muzzle.

Wow, loaded a few last night and it is a very significant difference in sound between lil gun subs and unique subs.

Hopefully I will have enough time to chrono a few and see where my charge weight needs to be.

Thanks

Any tips of getting the little 90gr bullet to start straight when seating it ?

Thanks !

Buy yourself a Lyman M die.

I haven't had good luck with Unique or Trail boss in my 90g loads... I loaded up some the other day with 4759 and had more consistent groups, but still not great. 1" at 50 yards. I have more work to do in this regard. :)
