147gr m80 load data

Post by dunk011 »

I've currently been loading my 147gr m80s over 16.2gr w296 with o.a.l @2.20. I've not seen any major pressure signs so far. I did a google search and found someone loading 147gr m80 with 17.4gr of w296. I thought that was on the high side since i've been loading to 150gr hodgdon data. Has anyone loaded to 17.4gr w296 ,and if so what kind of oal are you using? I just don't want to run into a kb situation so i thought i'd ask for advice first. Thanks for any help or advice.

I am in the infancy of load development for the 300blk but since you ask... I load M80s using 17.0 gr IMR 4227, CCI 400 and COAL 2.140". These M80s seem group best at higher velocities/hotter charges.

I use H110/W296 for the lighter bullets (110-125gr) using only published load data. HTH...

Just to add my experience in 2 16" carbine AR rifles using H110/Win 296 powder with 147 M80 pulls. Using LC brass, RP 7 1/2 primers and seating to 2.130" to 2.140" I just barely reach the 2000 fps range with loads getting 2001 to 2010 fps at 16.7 grains of H110. I reduced my loads to 16.5 grains for all M80 147 grain loads. At 16.7 grains it showed no high pressure signs but ejection was brisk. Not saying you can't go to 17.4 but I don't want to go that high and 16.5 shows good accuracy and is easy on cases and rifle.

You are correct to ask about the oal. In my experience, reducing the oal in the Blackout means less powder is required for the same velocity. I use the following in my 16" DD carbine:

M80 147 BALL, 17.5GR H110, WOLF KVB223M PRIMER, 2.16” OAL 1965FPS

LC formed brass, no crimp, no anneal. Start low, work up, and watch that oal. I was actually surprised at how much H110 worked in my gun, but that load gave the best accuracy and no high pressure signs.

I ran my initial tests for the 147 grain FMJ and 296/H110.

This is what I came up with:
(Sorry spread sheets don't copy and paste well.)

300 M2 GI 147 H110 16.4 1928 DSA 5/8/2012 2.065in
300 M2 GI 147 H110 16.6 1945 DSA 5/8/2012 2.065in
300 M2 GI 147 H110 16.8 1948 DSA 5/8/2012 2.065in
300 M2 GI 147 H110 17.0 1988 DSA 5/8/2012 2.065in
300 M2 GI 147 H110 17.5 1993 DSA 9/22/2012 2.065in

My weapon responded best with the 16.6 grain load. Only that loading meets my standard of 15 or greater test samples, the remainder are mostly 10 samples or a few more.
9 tenths of a grain more for about 50 fps faster and the start of pressure signs (in my weapon). DSA is my upper, 16 inch with carbine gas and buffer.
Every weapon will have different highs and lows.

Standard disclaimers.

Load with care,

OSOK

P.S.
CCI SR primers and mixed LC brass that I converted. That's what I always use and just don't list it.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to pickup from 16.2g and work my way up to 17.4g. I'm running a DD 16" carbine gas barrel. Right now the best I've got out of the 147's is 2moa @100yds. I'd like to see it bring that in to around 1moa@100. I can get 1/4 to 1/2 moa @ 100yds with 155 hornady amax rounds over 16g w296 with oal @ 2.200. I'll report my results when i get time to shoot again.

I loaded 147gr Win bullet @ 2.135" at 17.0gr W296 and had no pressure signs. This is from a 7.5" barrel.

I also loaded 17.5 and 18.0gr @ 2.135" but didn't have a chance to fire those. Still working up the load.

I had a chance to go out shooting yesterday. All of these were @ 25 yards since i was setup for subsonic testing.

powder charge bullet oal vel group
w296 16.1 147m80 2.215 1881 1moa
w296 16.8 147m80 2.130 1958 1.2
w296 17.1 147m80 2.220 1951 7@ 2moa 4 fliers all the way out to 5 moa ( weird )

i was real disappointed in the 17.1 group. I had to make sure something wasn't loose on the gun. I know i'm not the best shot out there but come on that's bad. The largest swing in velocity was 38fps for that group. I didn't see any pressure signs at all, so going to 17.4 doesn't worry me anymore. I think i'll start over and keep my oal @ 2.215 then work up to 17.4. I've only been reloading for a few years now so i'm still learning.

By the way my setup is a no name (keyhole forge marking) flattop upper with a daniel defense 16" carbine gas system. YHM free float quadrail and a nikon p300blk scope. stag lower, with a rock river 2 stage NM trigger.

I just shot some test loads thru my AAC pistol (10.3" Noveske, BMG BCG, HSS Tungsten buffer (6.5 oz) and Wolff XP buffer spring from heavybuffer.com)

M80 147gr bullet
15.8, 16.0, and 16.2 H110
CCI 41 primers
2.180 OAL
Crimped with FCD

They all shot great, with no signs of excessive pressure. Not sure about speed or accuracy, as this was simply to find out what my gun likes....so I think I will start with the middle 16.0 and see where that goes.

I posted some of this in a different thread, but figured for future searchers, I’d sum up here too.

I decided to do a quick test of Shooters World Socom in my 10.5” PWS barreled 300BLK. I took some new 147gn M80 bullets from American Reloading and put them over 20.0gn Shooters World Socom at 2.17”. That OAL was chosen to provide more powder space vs an earlier 150 SST test and to put the cannelure just in front of the case mouth. Its reduced charge and less compression vs my max with the SST yielded no pressure signs on the first two pieces of brass, so I finished a 5-round string.

1904, 1902, 1899, 1909, 1929
Avg 1908, ES 30, SD 10

These numbers and no pressure signs convinced me to load a full 100 of these. I’ll do accuracy testing of this load another day, and with this low ES/SD, I’m hoping for decent results.
