UPDATE, Hornady 208's & three different (not ideal) powders in hand.

Post by defiant2 »

Which powder to start with?

(FYI, never reloaded anything. Been reading up on it for over a month and am ready to set up powder die. Have a Dillon 550, factory blackout brass (once fired), Cci 450 and 400 primers)

Powders on shelf:
H110
H4198
IMR4227

Any advice on which one to start with for subsonic 208's? I'm assuming, the h4198, but perhaps not?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: factory AAC 9" pistol. AAC-SDN-6 on it most of the time.

I have been getting good results with 9.6gr of 4227 and a COL of 2.220 with the 208 A-max.

Have not loaded any 208s with 4227, but it would cycle my 180gr subs, no BHO though. So I would guess that with 208gr bullets it might do both. Hodgdon says a max of 10.3gr of 4227, so I would start at 10 and work up or down as needed. It has higher pressure than h4198 and h110 at subsonic velocities, which would give it a better chance of cycling, so I would start with that first until you can find some A1680. I would highly recommend getting a chronograph too, that really helps with developing loads, especially subs. Set aside some cash to nab the next jug of 1680 you see. Definitely the most reliable subsonic powder in an AR.

of the blackout powders i've tried (lilgun, h110 & 4227) 4227 was the only one that would even think about cycling my 16" carbine gas upper pushing 208 amax (i dont have a can)

i had only loaded some testers for function check, i havent yet worked a proper test batch of them yet.

I've used both 4227 and 4198 that have ran fine thru my 8" pistol but I've yet to chrono so I can't be positive it's sub. That's without the can. I sure hope it is sub. If I have to drop the charge to slow it down I'd almost bet that the can would allow it to function. FWIW it groups outstanding at 50 yds. I've yet to try it further.

I would not say H4198 is not ideal. You should have success with it.

Success! (And a few questions because of it)

15 of the 208 a-max, reused gemtech brass. 10gr imr4227. BHO with & without can. No sonic crack (don't have chrono yet). Fed through a factory 9" AAC pistol and another vltor custom with a 9" aac barrel. Overall length was just shy of 2.258-60, barely a crimp.

Questions:
1. How much crimp? (If any). I have 4 in my question bucket. .3255-.3285 just inside of case mouth while all about .330 midway between case mouth and shoulder.
2. Two were 2.245 & 2.253 in length. Too short or ok to fire?
2. Do we cause problems by shortening to 2.255 overall while maintaining the 10gr.

Thanks all!
