I am putting together some loads for my M1S upper (carbine gas port), and am trying a few different powders (Lil' Gun, 4227, H110). Using IMR 4227, the Sierra manual lists loads from 16.0 to 17.5 grains with a 150 grain projo, and Hodgdon's 2014 Reloading Manual lists charge from 16.5 to 17.8. I'm putting together some test rounds using 16.8 grains, but it seems like the charge is being compressed - is this normal?

Hmmmmm...
I just loaded some 125gn TNT's over 17 gns of 4227. The bullet JUST touched the powder in the case with a COAL of 2.072
I know thats short but want max case holding the bullet at the neck. My normal 125gn load is Hornady SST crimped into the canallure (2.097)
I would think based on a 150 flat base set to max length for your mag (I run Pmags at a max length of 2.20) you are right at the limit of a compressed load. Id be real careful with that.

I have settled on 16.5 grains of IMR4227 with 150 grain bullets. This is out of a 16" Model 1 upper.
Not the fastest load around but plenty accurate and pleasant to shoot.

What length are you loading to?

The 150's I'm using have a cannelure.
Seated to cannelure, COL is 2.065"

Is that with pistol or carbine gas? And what type of bullet? Flat nose or a fmj/bt?
I've got both types and a bunch of 4227. About to load some up myself.

The bullets I'm using are 150 grain FMJBT.
For the 125 grain Hornaday BT, I am using 17 grains of IMR4227...COL to fit magazine.

Interested. I've got Hornady 150gr FMJBT coming out my ears as I bought a ton for my girlfriends M1A. Might have to try some over the 4227.
Re: Anyone Out There have experience with IMR 4227 & 150 gr.
I just started to load some 150 gr. fmjbt Hornady bullets with IMR4227. The Hornady manual calls for a 2.220" OAL. This barely puts the bullet in the case. I want to load it to the cannelure which will make it about 2.08". My question is will this cause excessive pressure? I'm starting with a mid range load from the manual, 15.1 grains.
