Powders For the 300 blk. Links to published Data added.

Post by gds »

There tends to be a lot of newer 300 blk owners, and re-loaders joining lately, and I believe that will continue to grow. They are constantly asking about powders. Often powders that are way to slow to be used effectively in the 300 blk. So this is going to be a List of powders that can be used in the 300 blk. It is a beginning and the list will be adjusted and or modified as things progress. This will not be for specific loads, although some may be listed, but will be broken down for supersonic powders, subsonic powders, powders that work for both, as well subsonic powders for bolt action and single shot, and may be broken down more as things progress. I may add notes to the original Post to each powder, with the understanding that sometimes what works for one gun combo may not work for another gun combo. If you see something not right let me know, by also giving supporting reasoning. Simply telling me I am wrong won't help. This may be ongoing and won't necessarily be complete for a while.

Powders that clearly work and have been tested thoroughly be AAC.

Super sonic- H110
Subsonic- Accurate 1680

Powders that have been tested and tried by others.
VihtaVuori N110 Sierra Lists for subs and super sonic loadings for 300 whisper.
Hodgdon LIL'GUN Seems to work good for subs and supers. May not function some 16 inch carbines gas systems.
Winchester 296 - this is the same powder as H110
IMR, Co IMR 4227
Hodgdon H4227
IMR, Co SR 4759
Accurate Arms 5744
Alliant Reloder 7
IMR, Co IMR 4198
Hodgdon H4198
Alliant 2400 can work for both subs and supers
Alliant 300mp seems to show promise for super sonic loadings
Vihtavuori N120 Sierra lists it for super thru sub sonic loadings for 300 whisper.
AA#9 Sierra lists it for super thru sub sonic loadings for 300 whisper
AA#5 Sierra lists it for light weight supersonic loadings (135gr and lighter) for 300 whisper, However other powders give much higher velocity.
AA#7 Sierra lists it for light weight supersonic loadings (135gr and lighter) for 300 whisper, However other powders give much higher velocity.
AA2015 is listed in some super sonic loadings for 150gr and above.

Powders for subsonic single shot, bolt action
Trail boss- good for lighter grain subs, can work for heavy subs but requires almost a full case and a very compressed load.

Alliant Red Dot - Works well for heavy subs, but very extreme spread for lighter grain subs. Not recommended for light weight subs.

WW231
Unique
N320
AA#5 - tends to throw flyers but very quiet
HS6

IMR 4756 Lehigh defense recommends this powder for their bullets for single shot firearms. It is finicky, but once worked up it is very quite.

Blue Dot Heavier subs 200 gr plus
700X Seems to work well for mid range subs

Powders that simply won't work
IMR 4350
IMR 4064
Alliant Re-loader 15
Alliant Re-loader 17
H4831SC

For more detailed info here is a link to some powder company sites with load data.

select rifle cartridge and then 300 AAC Blackout

Lists loads using:
IMR 4227 (subs and supers)
W296 (subs and supers, however may not function some carbine systems with subs. Most have reported it will not work for pistol systems either)
H110 (subs and supers, however may not function some carbine systems with subs. Most have reported it will not work for pistol systems either)
Lil Gun (subs and supers, however may not function some carbine systems with subs)
Trail Boss (lightweight subs, will not function AR15)
IMR 4198 (heavy grain bullets, seems better in heavy subs)
H4198 (heavy grain bullets, seems better in heavy subs)

Accurate Powder

This s the new 2016 update. LT30 powder added for sub loads

look down to the 300 AAC Blackout on page 37

Lists loads for:
Ramshot Enforcer (supers only)
Acurate 4100 (supers only)
Accurate 5744, (subs and supers)
Accurate 1680 (subs and supers)

Sierra Load data:

This appears to be a retooling of the pages that sierra had listed for the 300 whisper. but only supers up to 180gr

Here is the older Sierra 300 Whisper Load data sheet that includes data for heavy subsonic rounds.

Lehigh Defense Load Data page

http://www.lehighdefense.com/index.php/load-data

Lehigh defense 110gr controlled Chaos factory load
19.0gr of Ramshot Enforcer at a coal of 2.110 in Hornady or Jagemann brass

The following are loads that Lehigh Defense recommends for the 194gr ME bullet. velocities averaging 1,040fps in most 16" guns using the 194gr ME bullet, Federal small rifle primer, and 2.200" COL:

A1680 - 11.0gr
IMR4227 - 9.5gr

Powders from 60-72 on the Hodgdon burn rate chart SHOULD all work(most have been proven to work) in the AR15 platform.

In a bolt gun you could go to a much faster powder(think pistol powders), but I wouldnt go slower into the more "real" rifle powders.

To save a bunch of questions, you may want to add W296 next to H110, with a note that they are the same powder.

I like the topic, good initiative on consolidating info for the new comers. Certifiable has done some pretty good work on Subsonic powders for both carbine and pistol gas systems. RL-7 seems to work somewhat with subsonic loads in Carbine (which will work for pistol) gas systems with maybe a few bolt hold open (BHO) issues but that may not bother too many.

Good work :)

Geez. And i thought i was the only who ever tried sr4759. Turns my carbine gas rifle into a single shot (no jams, doesnt even try to cycle), but highly accurate.

I actually am not sure about the feasibility of SR4759. It is on the burn chart in between all the others, but you are the only one I know of that has tried it.

Honestly I don't know. I have not seen a lot of the VV powders in my area.
