Powder used in Barnes 110 tac tx loads

Post by jfab1165 »

Anybody know what type of powder is used in the factory load. And, charge?

They all touch at 100 out my rem700 sps. I want to try to reload the same recipe when I find the bullets again.

I took apart a few to load the blacktips in some 30RAR cases and I measured 19gr of powder, not sure what kind of powder but it resembles H110

Not sure what they use, but here is what they recommend.

I pulled a couple of boxes of black tips and dumped the powder in the tomato garden. I don't think its H110 but I don't know what it is.

talonxracer, wondering where that powder would come to in the case with the TAC-TX on top. Guessing .....??.....the loading density would be about 95-98%. Any info on this ??

If you put this back together using H110,wondering what the velocity would be as compaired to the 2350 that is advertised for the factory round. (??) --- pruhdlr

My reloads:

Barnes 110 TAC-TX
19.0 GR H110
CCI 450
2.250" OAL
Crimped
Series 1 Shots: 5
Min 2312 Max 2347
Avg 2334 S-D 14
ES 35
Series Shot Speed
1 1 2312 ft/sec
1 2 2347 ft/sec
1 3 2327 ft/sec
1 4 2344 ft/sec
1 5 2343 ft/sec

Factory:
Barnes 110 TAC-TX
Factory Rounds
Series 1 Shots: 5
Min 2328 Max 2362
Avg 2347 S-D 14
ES 34
Series Shot Speed
1 1 2336 ft/sec
1 2 2354 ft/sec
1 3 2328 ft/sec
1 4 2357 ft/sec
1 5 2362 ft/sec

My reloads put 4 into a vertical inch with one flyer about 1.5" to the left. Barnes factory loads put 4 into a vertical 1.25" with one flyer an inch to the right. All the chrono stats are pretty close. My guess is they are using about 19 gr of H110 based on my chrono results and talonxracer report of 19 gr of powder. Anything I tried over 19.0 gr of H110 started opening way up.

No matter what you read on the intarweb CCI450s and CCI41s ARE NOT BALLISTICALLY IDENTICAL with H110! I'm also not a intarweb lawyer so I don't argue with anyone who is.

The H110 I have is rather uniform in size and appearance, the powder I got out of the Barnes vORTX ammo was no larger and had the same shape as H110, but had smaller sized pieces in it, not as uniform in size. could that be any of the H110 clones like 298 or N110? I havnt played with them so no idea on appearance.

Wondering if Barnes would tell us if we simply asked. I'm pretty sure they would not divulge the amount of powder though.

Meanwhile.....I have some 296 and a low powered microscope. I will pull a factory TAC-TX and compare the powder to 296. --- pruhdlr

Most often commercial ammo uses a custom powder not generally available in stores
and they lot test and load (eg they adjust the amount to each lot)

So chances are it is a custom formulation that has characteristic very close to H 110 / 296

Manufactures load to pressure, not to velocity.
As previously stated, the load is adjusted lot to lot in order to achieve the pressure that they specify for that cartridge.
