First time tomorrow. Report and question

Post by fuller »

Well tomorrow is the day for me. I have everything put together and am ready to rock and roll. 10 rounds of each of the following are loaded:
AR, 16" 1:7 twist

120 gr lead HiTek casting (actual weight is 122.3)
17.3 Gr W296
OAL 1.855

110 gr Hornady SP Varmint
18.9 to 19 gr W296
Oal 2.040

110 gr HotCor Soft Point
18.9 to 19 gr W296
OAL 2.040

I will only be punching paper, no hunting, just looking for sum MOA. Since this is my first time out of the chute with the 300BLK, I figured I'd try a couple bullets at the 110 weight (there is a nice price difference  )
and then the leads. I have a lot of hope for the lead, just because of the price. After these I have a couple 125's to see if I can dial in. Having seen the thread by Rebel, the 125 SMK's are on my 'gotta try that' list.

PLEASE let me know if I am mistaken anywhere in my above loads. Thx, Fuller

That lead bullet gas checked?

17.3g of 296 will send a 120g projectile along at a pretty good clip...

Yes, it is gas checked. Thanks for asking. I should have mentioned that.

Let us know how that Hitek coating holds up, leading etc. Also, try some without a gas check. If you can, recover the bullets. I have been curious about this in my blkout too, just don't have any light cast yet. Thanks

Got to shoot 2 of the 3 loads. Total 10 rounds. ALL 10 were failure to eject. Went to the local gunsmith (the rife platform I am using was purchased used, just added the new BBL) and found that the gas tube had a small plug in it to reduce gas pressure. Evidently put into the gun by the previous .223/5.56 user/owner. Replaced the tube and all is well.

Hornady, Sp Varmint 110 gr over 19 gr W296: 2382, 2397, 2357, 2392, 2393 Ave 2384.2 FPS

122 gr lead w HiTek Coating over 17.3 gr. W296: 2352, 2218, 2212, 2222, 2264 Ave of last 4 2229 fps
The reason I did not use the 2352 fps in the average is that it was the very first round fired out the a brand new bbl, and the bbl was cold at the time.

I am surprised at the speed of the Hornady's, over 100fps more than the table said to anticipate.

Now a little back story. After the gas tube was changed out, I went up to the range to shoot 1 round of ea. of the 3 loads just to check for ejection. I loaded the lead as #2 in the mag. 1st shot, perfect ejection, 4 feet to the back right. Lead as the 2nd shot, no ejection. 3rd shot perfect ejection within inches on the 1st shot. NOW does the fact that the lead did not eject tell me that there is a possibility that there was not enough gas exiting thru the gas tube to cycle the bolt completely? If so, knowing that I loaded 17.3 gr W296, would increasing the load by .3 gr (17.6, 17.9 etc) until grouping and proper cycling are achieved an acceptable paradigm to use? ALSO, does anyone have a suggested max for the lead? The bullets are gas checked.
