SUBSONIC AR cycling with A1680, R7, A5744......FINAL

Post by sranch »

This is the third and final testing I've done that is updating my current findings for these powders.

Tested in a variety of locations and temperature on three different days.
65-70 degrees, 1000-2800 feet MSL

Method: For the initial testing I loaded 3 shots for each load and averaged the data, then did some minor smoothing of the data based on some outliers. Second and third round testing was simply "around the edges" to verify my previous findings. Numbers are in FPS. Loads not listed were either below what I thought would reliably cycle the gun or above what I thought would reliably stay under the sound barrier.

All loads shown reliably cycled the gun listed below. I did not test if the last round would reliably hold the bolt open. All shots were made suppressed.

Yes, Accurate 1680 is a superior powder for cycling ARs subsonic!
Part of this testing was to see if the A1680 actually produces more volume of gas than the others to help in cycling subsonic rounds. I think the test results show this is true. I was a bit surprised I could even make a 155 grain load that would cycle reliably. None of the others could come close.
Reloader 7 is a good solid reliable powder for cycling subsonic ARs with consistent results.
A5744 gives the most consistent speeds but the most inconsistent cycling of the gun. This may result in the best accuracy if you can find a load that reliably cycles your gun. This powder was the most likely to cause a hickup near the lower loads.

Another surprising finding is that the flat tail 180g Winchester Power Point clearly worked better and gave a wider window of operation than the boat tail bullets. Comparing this to a similar weight 180g HPBT I would expect superior results in at least the area of more likely to use the gas more efficiently.

Okay, A1680 is an impressive powder for cycling subsonic ARs. Glad I bought 8 pounds :P

Very nice data for carbine gas, greatly appreciated.

If you can't find A1680, look for Reloader 7, A5744, H4198 or IMR4198. Any of these cycle my 16" carbine gas AR under a 220 SMK @ 1000 fps w/o a suppressor.
I'm hoping to have my 16"/carbine gas/220 SMK data verified and posted by this weekend

Haven't had time to do anymore testing but its coming.
Have the next week or so off work and if I can find where I put the test loads I made, I will get them done

Anyone tried AA2200? Accurate shows it at the same burn speed as Reloader 7 (although most 6.8 SPC shooters report it to be just a little bit slower than Reloader 7).

I've got a lot of it, as it is my primary powder for 6.8 SPC. Would be good news if it worked for double duty.

Certainly worth a try.

Great info, thanks!

Having gone to a new AR upper, my previous pet load (8.1 gr lil gun over a 208-Amax) doesn't cycle the action fully, so a new load is needed.

I'll work on the 1680 loads.

Was anything noticeably louder/quieter? I did some load development for a friend with 1680 and it seemed a bit louder than my lil gun loads. It makes sense, given the added gas pressure.

No free lunch, I guess.

I measured similar loads with my sound meter. No noticeable difference.

You would have to go either slower than my target of 1050 fps on loads or I've heard you can get a little quieter with faster burning powders. Of course then you need a bolt gun.

With an AR platform you will still always have gas leaking out the side door each shot. Basically about 90 decibels. If you really want to go quiet you must use a bolt gun and make/find a custom suppressor that is much bigger than these little store bought jobs.

Other option is a LAR side charge with an adjustable gas block closed. It is a quiet setup (essentially same as a bolt gun function) but it is a single-shot solution.

I will try the 1680 200-gr recipe.
