They should stablize well. They are short bullets, and any 1:7" or 1:8" twist barrel will do an excellent job stablizing them.
The biggest problem with them is their horrible BC. They slow down really really fast.
For instance:
125gr Sierra FN SP (30-30 bullet) fired at 2200 fps. At 100 yards, it has slowed down to 1,585 fps for 697 ft-lbs
By contrast: 125gr Sierra SP (spitzer) fired at 2200 fps. At 100 yards, it is still moving along at 1,921 fps for 1,024 ft-lbs

Same is true for the 150gr 30-30 bullets vs. a pointy SP.
150gr Sierra FN SP (30-30 bullet) fired at 2,000 fps. At 100 yards, it has slowed down to 1,615 fps, for 868 ft-lbs
150gr Sierra SPT fired at 2,000 fps. At 100 yards, it is still moving along at 1,780 fps for 1,055 ft-lbs.

They will stabilize, but the 30-30 profile bullets have horrible BCs and would be best at short range (under 50 yards). If the quick slow down doesn't do you in, the lack of expansion due to the low velocity will.. Now, on a hog, that may be a good thing, deeper penetration, but less tissue disruption.

I also noticed they shot lower than the SPT bullets. As much as 1.5" at just 30 yards. Probably not a big deal, but at longer distances, they won't have the same path.

All that said, I'd pick them up if they were available at the gun show for cheap.

Thank you ALL for all that great input and load data. I'm much more confident now about using these bullets and glad to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks flat and/or round is ideal for this cartridge. Once I've done some loadin' and shootin'................I'll do some more writtin'.............

I also really appreciate this, when I had a 30-30 I picked up a bunch of bullets for reloading, unlike some people I do not feel the need to keep 1,000 loaded bullets for a firearm. I recently finished my first 300BLK and have been making brass for it. I also have been loading up bullets but I have tons of 30-30 bullets. I have been loading in small quantities my flat nosed and my FTX bullets just to see how they run....you all are making me pretty hopeful...thank you

Ohhhh please do report on the FTX bullet speed, accuracy, and expansion performance! I've been waiting for someone to give some fine details about the FTX bullet performance. I've seen a thread out there that says they feed in an AR and shoot fine, but not much beyond that.

Also can you confirm if you have the 160gr 30-30 FTX or if you have the other FTX bullet intended to be shot from a .308 rifle?
Finally, if you do have the 30-30 FTX bullets would you be interested in trading 100 or so of them?

This is exciting!

So far the best group I have shot with my AR w/16inch carbine 1/8. Has been using 150 gr speer 30-30 bullets.
Unfortunately I cant get the velocity out of them I want to use as a hunting round.
They feed just fine though.
I have a huge bag of these 30-30 bullets(2000+ Ahhh the days you could find bulk deals cheap.). So I shoot them in 300 Black out, 30-30 and 308 win.

Has anybody tried the 170 grain Flat Nose from Hornady? I got a box the other day to try out and see how it works. If I don't like it, I can always use them in the .308 also.

After not having luck after multiple attempts to get a 125gr Sierra Pro Hunter Spitzer to expand, I finally got around to testing the 30-30 125gr HP FN bullet in my 300 blackout.

Running about 2,000 fps out of my 8.5" CMMG, the bullet went through a 1/2 gallon jug of water, then 2 full gallon jugs of water, and into a 3rd gallon jug, where it stopped. I put that at 18-20" of penetration of water, this is on par with where I like to seem them make it. The Barnes Blacktip stopped in the same 3rd jug for comparison. This is MUCH better than my experiences with the Spitzer SP version which went thru over 40" of water and I missed stopping it in 2 attempts, once even going thru my 2x6" backer board.

Note though, the jacket did seperate from the core, but everything came to rest in the final jug. The bad thing about this bullet is its horrible BC. It slows down really quickly. So, you guys with the 16" barrel pushing his bullet about 2200 fps should be good to go to 50 yards, where it will have already slowed down to 1,895 fps. Out of my 8.5", the BC kills my range.

Sure looks like it expanded nicely, For a home defense round that wouldn't be a bad choice, unless you live in a mansion with 100yard long hallways........

I'd hate to see what these 170gr bullets are gonna do against a deer... Maybe I will just load them in .308...
