110gr Sierra Varminter HP

Post by steven11b »

Here are the results of shooting multiple layers of Kevlar. I wanted to get a intact bullet to see the effects of .308 rounds at 300 blackout velocities. I managed to get enough layers to stop a round after 5-6 went threw completely this one didn't. this round now weighs 109gr's and is .656" at its widest point.
16inch barrel in AR carbine length
19.2 grains of lil gun
Sierra 110 HP Varminter
2.04 OAL
Speer once fired reformed .223 brass
Fed 205 primer
From past results with 110gr bullets I am guessing velocity around 2300 fps.
25yards from muzzle

Did they feed and extract well? I have some test rounds loaded up at the same COAL, and I had to put a light crimp on the bullet since it wanted to pull from the case as it slammed into the chamber.

that's funny you said that because I have shot 300 of these so far and yesterday the last round in the mag didn't feed correctly. Looks like the tip got hung up and it pulled the bullet sideways and loose. But that was the first and only malfunction with these even down to 2.030.

I purchased just ONE box of the Sierra 110 gr. .308 bullets, but it was way to short. Can you tell me what the OAL was of your 300 round when finished? Or did you guys mount the bullet way up high as possible? I have purchased Remington 115gr and they are normal 300 OAL, just wondering..

That seems like a long OAL for such a short bullet, but no arguing with the results. I loaded mine at 2.04 and as stated above I needed to crimp to keep the bullet from coming out of the case.

I wouldn't say these are way to short. I have used a good amount and hadn't had but one failure. But I haven't figured out what has caused it. They are a shorter round and have less room to mess with OAL. But I have been using 2.04 and works well besides the one failure to feed. I have tried out to 2.05 but accuracy went down hill. I use a light crimp as well. That 2600 fps is pretty impressive! The highest I have ever heard of in this round!

I load the 110gr. Varmint HP's to a short 1.950". Full-length small-base sized with no crimp. I'm shooting an 8.1" barreled AR Pistol with a 1:8" twist. Functions perfectly... And I've been able to shoot 2" groups at 100yds. using an Eotech with no magnification and resting on a wheel-chock.
