SS media tumbling

Post by velo555 »

What are your thoughts on cleaning cases with stainless steel media (pins) in wet media tumblers?

I ran 100 for the first time yesterday and was amazed at the results. Thumlers tumbler, stainless pins, 2TBS Dawn dish soap, 1/4tsp LemiShine, gallon of cold water. 4 hours later the brass looks better than when it came loaded the first time.

Easy cleanup, no dust, no walnut or corn stuck in the primer pockets.

I'll never do vibratory tumbling again.

Yeah I like the way the results look. I ran across this thread that peaked my interest. I am getting all the parts to build one.

I started using this method about four years ago.
Since then, I have given away my vibe tumbler to a buddy of mine that just got into hand loading.

A few tips / tricks...
- Use hot water, tablespoon of Dawn Dish Detergent, and 1/2 teaspoon of Lemi-Shine
- Tumble for no more than 4 hours (Thumblers Tumbler High Speed)
- Pre-Rinse inside of tumbler barrel by filling and dumping it with hot water three times. (Agitate between rinses)
- Fill large bowel with hot water, add Lemi-Shine, and place brass in it after brass is separated from media.
- Pick up a Lingerie Wash Bag from Walmart and use it to dry brass. (Either place bag on heat pump / AC outside, or put in dryer with several towels)

The best iv ever used! Like said above, but i tumble for 2 1/2 hours then rinse seperate & put in a dryer box i made. Ill never toumble brass any other way! Twice the amount of brass in half the time, better results with clean brass & less mess/clean up! Whats not to like. Iv never had peened case mouths like some people worry about. There is no down side to SS media!

It's the best way to do it.

SS pins are the best way to go.

Make sure you dry tumble new pins for 4-6hrs to debur them when new.

I have a bunch of 577-450 Martini-Henry cases that have been fired several times with black powder. After a couple of hours going round & round in the stainless media they all look like virgin brass inside & out. Just be sure the cases are thoroughly dry before you load them.

SS is the only way I go now. I bought the Harbor Freight tumbler to just try it out to see what all the hoopla was about. I love how my brass comes out and the tumbler is still going after about 3k of assorted brass run through it.
