Cleanest Powder for 300AAC Blackout Load

Post by vertical ascent »

I am asking inputs from fellow reloaders on this board, I have on hand these powders:

Accurate 1680
Accurate 5744
Hodgdon H110
W296 (This is what I am currently using and this powder is dirty)

Which of the powders I have listed is the cleanest and doesn't leave much residue on your weapon?

I have also read on this board N110 is the cleanest they have used, but I can't find any of this powder.

Thanks for any input.

H110 and W296 is the same powder in a different wrapper. If its burning dirty its because the pressure is too low.

OMG, I ran maybe 15 rounds in a 16" using 1680 and I think it's the dirtiest powder I have ever used.

Lil'Gun (will not work in carbine gas systems, only pistol) looked like I ran one round. Very clean.

They were both suppressed . . . but 1680 was really filthy

YMMV

Powder Valley has N110 in stock.
For supers, I won't use anything else.

Any powder used with a suppressor will be dirty, thats the nature of the beast. The carbin is pushed back through the action, thats just the way it is. I use A1680 for subs & H110 for supers. But i clean mine when it gets to dirty, thats part of it.

I don't believe the OP indicated that he uses a suppressor.

I've never had an issue with H110 being dirty but I've never loaded light with it either. There's a variety of other suitable powders on the market. Try a few and see what your AR likes best.

If i remember correctly all powders i have tried for supers were basically the same subs were a different story. I used h110 and lilgun. Unlike other posters lilgun did not work as good as h110 for me. The es and sd numbers were all over with lilgun when i tried it.

I should have added this info:

My loads are all super (for now)
I have a 16in barrel with a mid-length gas system
My current load for the W296 is 14.5gr/2.168 COAL pushing a Hornady 150gr FMJBT bullet
The velocity I am getting with on average is 1750fps

Sounds about a grain low. You're probably not sealing the chamber completely. 296/110 doesn't like light loads.
