147 gr subsonic reloads for handi rifle with 231

Post by bubba04 »

I recently scored a handi rifle for cheap which sprung me into the 300 blkout game.

I am hoping to use hp38 (win231) sub sonic 147gr surplus bullets I have.

Load data I have read is 4.7 to 5.0 grains of 231. Does anyone have any other experience with this powder/bullet combo?

I don't think so. I'm on these boards all the time and have only come across 231 references via Google searches on the site. You may just need to load safely and give it a shot :)

Crap, I misread wc231 thinking it was w231. Surplus powder not gonna be the same.

I do better reading pictures.

This is in my AAC Micro7 (16" bbl):

5.0GR WW231, WOLF/TULA KVB223M PRIMERS, M80, 2.16” OAL, 1056FPS
BRASS FORMED FROM LC 5.56 CASES
NO CRIMP
NO ANNEAL
FINE ACCURACY

I haven't fired it through my Handi. I've also stopped using KVB223M in the bolt gun and Handi, as it gave 2-3% failure to fire (hard primers). I'm now using CCI 400's in the bolt guns and Handi. I still use KVB223M's in the AR's with no failures to fire. Recommend starting around 4.7gr and working up until you get the velocity and accuracy you need.

Note: I may have posted "WC231" elsewhere, as in "Winchester Cartridge", but I am using Winchester commercial 231, not surplus 231.

Hell yes this is what I read. I have hp38 coming out of my ears so I was quite excited when I read this post. Thank you for commenting.

I have been wondering about my wolf primers. I have yet to use them for my rifles, however I am experiencing the same thing with my small pistol primers.
