Reloading bench design/setup help

Post by vz58 »

Ok the reloader and accessories are ordered. I was going to take a 3/4" plywood sheet, cut it to half and double it up. So roughly a 1.5"x 2'x6' top. Could I get pics and / or setup advise from those who have a setup.

Here is an external link to many pictures of reloading benches/rooms.

I like the idea of no cabinets above the press. It allows more light from above to reach the shellplate, so you can see what you are doing. Also, the area behind my press is mainly used to store junk. A bench that isn't so deep would force me to keep it more organized.

if you're in to building stuff (or have time to)...

OR, are a teacher and have access to a middle school shop class :)
granted...it might not end up perfectly level or square...but hey...cheap labor. They work for donuts.

got a spot all picked out for this one.
Supplies shouldn't break the bank either.

This is a design I looked at before I built mine. At the time I didn't like it at all, however after using mine for several years I have grown to like some of the features on the bench Bucky linked to. Notice the benchtop is narrow and there are no overhead cabinets to block light.

It is a complete tangent from building your own, but check out your local Home Depot for kitchen cabinets. Last time I was there they had some that looked like someone was trying to break them appart. If you ask to talk to a manager and mention nobody will buy these cabinets because of the condition, they may drop the price. You will have to go home and use some clamps and glue, but overall it is a time saver. I bought some cabinets for a different project for less than materials alone.

Before I sold my garage and tools, I used a homemade table: 4x4s for the legs, a skirt of 2x4s around the legs near the bottom and another at the top, 2x4 cross beams between the long sides of the skirt, and two sheets of 1" plywood on top of each skirt for the table, and a shelf below.

Now that I live in an apartment, I have one of these in the corner in my computer room.

I got my new kitchen cabinets from the RTA store, they were ready to assemble. I just did the installation work, and saved a lot of time and efforts

I set up my press on a box I made myself so that I could attach it anywhere. I have since ditched the hose crank in the back that connected to some 1/4" all thread that went down through the bench and just picked up some deeper C clamps.

I also built this bench much the same way you are looking to, it is lag bolted into the concrete and sturdy as a mofo.
