Discovery concerning annealed cases

Post by Darkstang »

Went to the range today and confirmed one of my suspicions. I have a group of brass that I had annealed before resizing.. This is brass that had previously been trimmed and sized from 223 Black Hills ammo and LC. It had been shot twice as 300.

I took brass that was annealed then sized/deprimed, then loaded. I also took brass from same group that had never been annealed and shot both...

Unannealed groups were horrible, annealed groups were 3/4 " and below.

I will anneal all my brass now ...

If you are chasing accuracy issues, don't overlook this.

Basically using a torch, shell holder on a drill, dark room, ir thermometer, pan of water. Brass must be clean and shiny so you can see the color change. Do a few and check temp with ir thermometer. This will give you an idea of the seconds it takes. Basically a deep faint maroon... Hard to see it in a lit room.

If it glows orange....too hot...

Takes some practice. Honestly, I am seriously thinking about a Giraud. Take all the human error out of it and I can get the consistency I am after.

I use Tempilaq 750 degree http://www.amazon.com/Fahrenheit-Celsiu ... B0041YD47M

I paint in on several cases to get the timing down, then re check every 100 or so and adjust my timing as needed.

All the best...Bob.

Still working on all the ones I annealed. My goal is 3-4. I have several hundred annealed.
Race season is here so my shooting will slow down...
