Powder suggestions for 130 gr cast super sonic.

Post by L1A1Rocker »

I've got a mold coming that will be dropping 130 gr hollow points. I'm curious if anyone would have a suggestion on what powder would be good to try with this.

Thanks

Nope - I have the same problem, wel . . . differnt question, same result.

Seems you have to go to the handloading thread and wade through 14 pages or so.

I actually tried that before posting. My eyes glazed over and I started dozing off on page 4. . .

Well that's how they are running it. Maybe down the road it will get more organized.

I read and culled out of the 14 pages and focused on the powders I have handy:

RE7, IMR4198, HP38

Found some guidance . . . so now I am loading and working down towards my goal of stable, subsonic ammo. My Core 300 BLK arrived today and it's like Christmas for me.

Let me look in QuickLoad for you and see what I can pull

ETA: what powders are you using/have?

Lets see, off the top of my head I have on hand
BLC(2)
2400
1680
5744
231
I think I've got some Unique too

That's about it off the top of my head. I've read that the 5744 and 1680 did not work so good for super sonic loading so I was curious if anyone had any recomendations on what they were using.

Oh hell, you are there than. the majority are using the 1680 and one gent noted that W231 (same as HP38) works out to be just about the same amount needed to run a 230g projectile.

Since I have none of the powders (exception W231 and HP38 being the same), can't really be a lot of help. Most of their loads were also for 220g SMK or 208g A-Max.
Looks like the 208's may not work for me. 220 SMK and 240 SMK works well and Im going to attempt the 225 gr Hornady HPBT

Powder= Winchester 231

Summer load = 5.8 gr W231 avarage 1041 FPS, ES = 15 FPS, SD = 5 OAL = 2.2125

Cold weather load = 5.7 gr W231 average 1010 FPS, ES= 14, SD= 5 OAL = 2.2125

These loads were crimped with a Lee collet die. Group size = 1.6" at 75 yards five shots prone with bipod and bean bag rear.

5.6 gr had an average of 973 FPS, ES= 27, SD= 10.... 6 gr had an average of 1083 es in the 20's
Sad to say I didn't cover the 1680. I have none.

Eyes glazed over . . . mine as well, but I did find some useful info.

All I could find was 180g pills, so I have to experiment.

REMEMBER: Start High and work slowly down, lest you get one stuck.

I don't imagine any of mine will be working sub loads.

let me run some number for you. Give me 15 minutes.

BLC(2) = not gonna work
2400 = not even among the options - is this AA #2400?
1680 = Nothing worthwhile
5744 = Nothing worthwhile
231 = Nothing worthwhile (good for subsonic though)

Sorry I couldn't really help at all. Quickload only has the 300 Whisper and I am not really confident in the data I am pulling.

Back to my subsonic loading . . . good luck

Oh well, thank you for you time on this. The only thing I can find on a google search is the original 300 AAC Blackout web site. It simply mentions that Hodgen H110 is recomended for super sonic loading and that's about it.

18grs of H110 worked out @ 2050 fps with my 130gr copper jacket HP. I'm thinking it would be a little slower on a cast type. I beleive you can go up to 19grs with the H110, but I would not do it with a cast bullet.
