Post by carcano38 »

New to the forum and 300 AAC. Could anyone help me with a good load using h110 and the winchester 147 grn bullets? Any help is much appreciated!

HotLead posted this a while back. use the search function it will save you alot of time.

I am getting 1900 fps from 147gr M80 bullets with 17.0gr Win 296/ H110 @ 2.145" oal.
This is with my 10.5" barrel, chronographed 15' from the muzzle.

I know its not the exact bullet but back down 10-15% and it should be a place to start

I started at 16.2 then 16.5 and 16.8. No visible pressure signs so I loaded to 17, easy to remember. Getting 1920 fps average from a 10.5' barrel.

I was getting 1845 fps with A1680 at 20 gr in a 16“ bolt gun with m2 ball.. seems to be to slow
And with win 296 at 17 gr 1910 fps .. seems to be to FAST

I was NOT impressd with the 296 load an ES of 61!

XMP5744 is between the two on the burn rate chart and may be the ideal powder for the M80 or M2 ball bullets.

I have two lbs of it and will test it. I have high hopes for the 5744 powder.

John, I have some H4227, which is pretty close on some charts to the burn rate of XMP5744. I'll load some this weekend and post. Thanks. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks for trying the 4227. Was my friends favorite 44 mag powder.

The BLK seems to like Straight wall pistol/rifle case brass powders Like 357 max, 45-70, 44 mag, 41 mag and 45 LC to some extent.

I will be very interested in what you get for FPS before you get "warm" pressure signs.

I brought home some Trail Boss to play with.. and 100 175 gr SMKs .. Looks like rain for a few days so not speed traps, but I might pop a few off for pressure signs with a silencer on and shoot at my dirt backstop at 5 feet to keep the noise down.

Supersonic loads echo off my pond and it acts like an amphitheater, so I need to limit my "exposure"

Shooting with my Local PD SGT here at the house helps some...

But at least I can work up a load to see about where the powder amt is then check for FPS later. I would RATHER use a chronograph while doing load development.. Sometimes you just have to make do.. It will just save me a little time when the light is right.

If I can get a 2000 fps load with a good ES I would be thrilled.

_---------

Edit to add.. I played with quickload and it appears w296 is the ideal powder for the M2 Ball. This is where books and real world will show the differences.

It will be fun to see if the program is correct and i am wasting my time and powder lol...

Quick load showed for the whisper and a flatebase rn (same seating debth as the m2 ball) a 3% better burn, a slightly less chamber pressure, and a higher fps than both a1680 and 5744. I did not see this in the real world. But the jacket material may be a lot different each bullet is really different to some extent. So we will see how it goes

My ammo can with 43 lbs of m2 ball bullets showed up on my door step today. Let the games begin!

are you using any of these loads in an AR-platform gun or is this load development all for bolt gun use right now?

john, jargonhead - thx much. figured a no-go on the 231 (which is too bad as I have a ton of it hanging around for .45ACP).
