150 Grain Subsonic Questions

Post by vetman »

I want to load some subsonic plinking loads with 150 Grain bullets. I am shooting a Ruger Ranch rifle with a Silencerco Omega suppressor.

For the quietest load should I go with Unique or Trail Boss? I was struggling to find a load for either powder using a 16" barrel and suppressor.

5.0 grains of Unique is what works for me out of a 16" 700 barrel. I get ~1000fps with el cheapo Remington Core-Lokt bullets, and roughly that with Sierra 150s.

It's also stupid quiet with my Revolution 9 on the end.

Have you tried these in an AR semi-auto?

I'm having a hard time finding posts with 150gr and powders that will reliably cycle the BCG.

The reason that you are having problems, is that it is not a popular combination. It can be difficult to get them to cycle and stay subsonic depending on barrel length. Then when you do get them working they tend to run dirty because of low firing pressure. Add that accuracy issues because of high velocity spreads and it's just not that fun to shoot.

They will work better in a short barrel because you can load to what would be a higher velocity in a 16" barrel and stay subsonic and use a faster powder that will burn cleaner.

Knowing barrel and gas system length would be helpful and there is some info in th pet loads section of hand loading.

Loading lower weight subsonics can be dangerous. Wild velocity swings due to powder orientation in the case.

He would have less trouble if he seated the bullet where it needed to be, instead of at the cannelure and using the bulkiest powder he could find. Even a powder less sensitive to position
A little research would have gone a long way.

As for cheap easy to load for subsonic bullets, it hard to beat Nosler 190's from shooters pro shop for $200 per 1000 when they are on sale, or $250 everyday at powder valley for new bullets. Then there are always pull.
