Alliant 300MP and Hornady 125 SSTs

Post by Jaeger62 »

Is anyone loading these bullets with the 300MP? I have 8lbs of that but also just found a 1lb jug of CFE Blk if that would be any better?

I've searched around here and found some load data for the 125 Sierra SPTs. Would I be ok starting out a little lower than those loads and working up?

Welcome to the forum!

Can't help with the powder selection or even suitability of the powder in question.

If you're loading supersonic start low and work up as you normally would. If subsonic then start somewhat higher than subsonic and work down.

edit: I still can't comment on suitability, but the burn rate for Alliant 300-MP is in the ballpark. At the chart below it's #66.

At least one source claims it to be among the best powders for 300 BLK.

300MP is the red headed stepchild in the 300 Blackout world, Not too many companies publish data for it. Barnes has a bit, as does Nosler, I think Sierra had a couple loads.

It is very similar to 296/H110. Enough so that you can use that data. In general you will need just a bit more 300MP to reach the same velocity as 296 and will probably not quite be able to reach the same max velocity. It is a very accurate and easy to work with powder.

As for CFE BLK and light supers......
Leave it where you found it unless your willing to sacrifice about 250 fps.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Yeah, sounds like the CFE is best for subs. I'll just use it for that purpose and use something else for supers.

I have load ladders with 300MP and Hornady 125 SSTs from 17.5 to 19.3 grs. COL that worked the best was 2.15.
Very Accurate loads across the ladder, but 18.4 seems to be the sweet spot.

I haven't used it for the SST but LOVE LOVE the load worked up under the 135 FTX bullet!! Its clocking 2200+ from my American 16".

The load is too hot for the MSR rifles. Shoots sub MOA in my bolt Ruger.

I just grabbed two more pounds of the powder last week when I was in a shop. I NEVER see it so took advantage!!
