Will 170gr FMJ-BT bullets work effectively?

Post by rob5r1 »

I found a .30 cal ammo can full of FMJ-BT bullets. I was in the right place at the right time in 1997 and forgot all about them. I think they are Lapua. They look like the D46 bullet, even though the website say's these are only available in 185gr. Measure .308" and weigh 170gr.

Can these be used effectively for 300 BLK? Plan on supersonic plinking ammo.

For plinking, pretty much anything will work in my opinion. Although frankly at 170 grain Full Metal Jacket. I would be working up some subsonic ammunition personally.
Yes, I am a Baptist, and yes I carry a gun. You might think I carry a gun because I don't trust God. Well you would be wrong. I have complete faith in my Lord. It is mankind I have no trust in

Not sure if it’s the same bullet, Vihtavouri has data for a 167 grain Scenar and N120. Starting at 9.4 grains as a sub, and 18.1 as max for a super. You can safely use 1680 or Shooters World with that data as a substitute. Depending on seated depth, you might start to get pressure signs towards the top.

When loaded correctly 20.5 grains with a 175 SMK is possible for just over 2000 fps. Using 1680.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

I found out these are Lapua D46 bullets. Currently only made in 185gr, the 170s were discontinued a few years ago. I've had these since the late 90s and they look brand new. Ammo cans are awesome! One of their people is going to get back to me with unpublished load data.
