230 gr cast polycoat subs

Post by Fhbrumb »

I have an 8.5 inch barrel AR pistol in 8:1 twist. In summer, likely adding a can. Experimenting with subsonic loads.

First load was a 230gr cast powder coated bullet. Put it on top of 9.0 grains of Win 296.

They tumble. Sighting at 50 yards I get keyhole after keyhole.

Suggestions on a good next effort? What should I keep? What should I move away from?

Thank you,
Frank

Do those powders burn in such a way as to improve the stability? Faster? Slower?

Pretty sure 1680 is available locally. May try that.

Thank you.

What is the specific bullet you're using? Have you measured the diameter?

Cast, poly coated, and sized to 309. Lee TL309-230 5R mold. I measured a few and they come in right at that 309.

The answer is get a new mold. That one sucks. :P

You may do a little better sizing to .310, or by going with a slower powder, but seriously, many many people have had trouble with that mold.

Not what I wanted to hear, but prolly legit. It's not my mold. I bought some bullets to try. I guess I'm done trying them...

I got that mold to work just OK. Bought a bit to open up the base to .310, doing away with the stupid boat tail base and and plunge down about 1/2". This will also remove the tumble lube area. Gotta work mo betta than it does now. If not, meh, buy a good mold for real.

Does anyone think that a little more pressure would make a difference?

Yes, would make them tumble sooner. I think most of the problem with this bullet is the lack of bearing surface and long unsupported section. Extra pressure makes it more likely to skip the rifling, which is why I suggested a slower powder. I have seen a few comments elsewhere from folks using H110 who said that they had better results when reducing the charge to the 7.5 grain range.
