i use a beam scale, and check it with an electronic. The beam scale is always more accurate, but I dont have a super expensive electronic one.

I like the beam scale as I can see what its doing as i add powder.

powder burn rates differ based on the amount of volume in the case. some powders sometimes act opposite than usual when you use less powder
for the same boolit and C.O.A.L. . an example is H110 which gets dangerous when you download it too much VS. IMR 4198 which can safely be cut in half in most cases for reduced cast loads. try reducing powder AND reducing C.O.A.L. at the same time and see if vel. goes down .

This bullet shows promise. Every time I look the ya re out of stock.

I just ordered 100 rounds loaded from Midway. (First factory ammo order in decades!) Should have tomorrow. I’ll shoot over weekend and decide what avenue to take.

My magnetospeed clocked the Sub-X factory ammo at a 1050 average. I saw expansion as advertised at that speed, so that was my target.

28 degrees this morning. Hornady brass, CCI #41 primers, COAL 2.078" (matched the factory ammo I had)
10.5" 1:7 unsuppressed barrel

IMR4198 needed 10 gr to hit 1056 fps average.
A1680 needed 12 gr to hit 1045 average.

I apologize for the incomplete data. I had a small time window this morning and really really cold fingers. Gettin old.

For what it's worth, the 4198 was giving more consistent groups at 50 yd, although nothing approaching 1 moa.
I found this bullet out of this barrel really likes barely supersonic speeds. 1180 - 1200 fps was showing 1 to 1.5 moa.

I ran a few out of my 14” Bbl and they hit 1100... but no crack?

Winchester 200g subs hit 1150... again no crack!! I’m at about 200’ elevation.

The Hornadys shot about 1-1.25” where the Winchester’s shot closer to 4”. All @ 50 yards.

Depends on temp. At 40 degrees the Hornady was basically subsonic and the Winchester dropped below in about .07 of a second. 1050 fps is a good rule of thumb for load work up because it should not crack down to about "0".
Speed of sound at 40 is 1097 fps.

Huh. Didn’t think “temp” had anything to do with it!! (For sure pressures some powders... So I guess speed as well...)

It was probably low forties. It was afternoon and IIRC the high temp was 43-45

Thanks

Altitude has almost zero effect on the speed of sound, It's all about air density and temperature is the biggest player there. A 5,000 foot change in elevation makes about a 20 fps difference in the sound barrier. Where 40 degrees moves it 45 fps.

Here's a calculator you can play with.
https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/sound.html

Also most decent ballistic calculators allow you to toggle the sound barrier for your inputs on and off. I know you can with JBM that is available free online.

Have 200 sub-x in route and fresh once fired 223 Lake City converted brass. Only going to load for subs to keep case I.D. as minimal as possible, prep as usual flash hole deburr, primer pocket crimp swaged, case trim 1.365", neck turned to .012", annealed, collet neck sized with turned down mandrel. Good thread here and I will add load data when time allows.
One ragged hole! The quest for accuracy continues...
