I bought a couple boxes of the Hornady 190 Sub-X bullets from Midway and received them yesterday. I loaded up 15 to take to the indoor range for basic function testing later today.

I've really started to like VV N120 and my short barrels and suppressors like 10.5 grs behind 220 gr projectiles. With N120, I seat the bullet on top of the powder and measure CBTO.

With the Sub-X, I'm trying 10 gr of N120 to start. seating the bullet on top of the powder puts the cannalure completely in the neck of thr case and seems pretty stumpy. So, I'm trying a CBTO distance of 1.585 that will put the case mouth at the very top of the cannalure in new Remington primed brass.

I will report back with some magneto speed results and function testing. I will be using a 9" AAC MPW with SDN-6 and a Honey Badger with a Trash Panda.

What barrel length are you using ?

What do you load your subsonic loads to? sub 1050fps?

So, results weren't optimal.

I was getting 780 fps average with 10 grains of VVN120 out of a 9" 1:7 twist AAC barrel at that CBTO length. I'm hoping for 980-1000 fps at the muzzle and 2 MOA at 100 yds.

If I'm going to stick with N120, I'm going to increase the powder charge from 11grains and step up to 12 grains to get a better case fill. N120 is the best combination of clean, quiet, and acurrate I've used and I'd like to see if I can grt itnto work with 190 gr and subsonic rounds. Dellet has said the cut over to N120 is 200gr projectiles.

I also have several pounds of N110 and AA#9 if I can't get N120 to do quite what I'm after.

I would have to see the actual statement, but my powder choice is based more on rifle configuration than bullet weight. To say N120 won't work with bullets under/over 200 grains without context is a poor statement.

No functional reason not to use N-120 for subs from 165 and up in an AR. Less than that it depends on the application. Short barrels and pistol has the option of other powders that have other qualities like noise and gas reduction.

That makes more sense. Although I have acquired a 10.5" carbine gassed barrel since then and it changed some of my thinking. Probably still couldn't get N110 going without a can, but I got 296 functional without one.

The problem with the longer barrels is keeping velocity down.

I've been working sub loads down in the RARR first. Once they are where I need them to be in velocity, then I know that they will be both truly subsonic and accurate in the 10.5" pistol. Both are 1/8 barrels and pretty dang accurate. OAL was the only thing I encountered that could be a challenge in cross over between the two platforms. Relieving the front lip on the RARR mag allowed pretty much flawless loads for both and a lot less hassle in feeding in the little bolt gun with some cast bullets. I have 2 lbs of N120 that I'm still working with, plenty clean and accurate, just need warmer weather for some chrono data.

I used N120 with everything from Lapua 200FMJBT to Lehigh 194 all the way to SMK240 and 225 BTHPs - very long bullets. No problems doing 960-980 FPS. I doubt it’d be a problem with 190 Subx

Ok, here is what my 9" 1:7 Advanced Armament Corp barrel liked the best in terms of function out of an AR with speeds I was after

190 Sub-X
11.5 grains VV N120
New Remington Brass
Rem 7 1/2 primers
CBTO 1.580 (case mouth at the very top of the cannelure with boat tail resting on powder)
Ambient temp 66 degrees.

5 shot group unsuppressed at the muzzle measured with Magneto Speed V3

MAX: 1071
MIN: 1033
AVG: 1053
SD: 13.6

I didn't handweigh, just ran them through the dillion powder measure checking for 11.5 grains on 3 consecutive dumps before loading up 10. It was accurate at 20 yards standing with a 2moa red dot. I didn't measure the group but should have.

What’s the length of those bullets ?
