Belling case mouth.

Post by BOB567 »

I could have sworn someone here recommended buying a 30 carbine neck expander fot lead and plated bullets. Cant find the thread now. Do many people utilize this method?

Every time I've seen 30 carbine it was about getting the Lee powder-through expander to work with 300 BLK. Here's one such thread. viewtopic.php?t=89761

I agree with popper. If you don't need powder-though, the Lee universal expander body with NOE expander plugs is hard to beat.

I use the Dillon powder through die, adjusted to bell the case. If I'm not loading on the 550B, then I bell with a Hornady .38/.357 pistol belling die, adjusted to bell enough to prevent shaving off the coating....it works fine. It's what I had on hand, set it up on a inexpensive Lee single stage, clamped next to the RCBS used for seating. Most subs are loaded this way, I'm always tinkering with different powder/bullet combos. Supers are full on rock and roll on the Dillon 8)

Probably me. I did it with the following:

.357 powder thru expanding die body with .30 carbine powder thru expander plug, .32 ACP plug, and. 30 Mauser bullet seater plug. Parts are free from Lee.

My thread on it: viewtopic.php?f=141&t=100380&p=972604#p972604

For cast in a Dillon, I run the RCBS 300 Blk size die with the 0.309" expander from a 7.62x39 set ( Decap Unit -.310, but it measures 0.309") and then use the 30 carbine funnel in the powder measure for a little bell.

For non progressive the NOE mandrels in a LEE universal sizer work great.

I think the reference to the 30 carbine you’re thinking of is for the Lyman M die. They make other 30s but the carbine version works best for BLK.

Lyman M die for 30 carbine works well. I think the Lee with NOE insert is better. Both work well in my experience. The NOE is better IMO with cast bullets as you have a choice to match the bullet you're using.

If you have an LEE expanding die from almost any larger caliber, you can use it to bell the 300BLK.

I use a Lee 375 H&H expander with the die adjusted high enough to create the desired amount of flare.
