N120 and Nosler 220 HPBT

Post by offsidewing »

Hello All,

I'm looking for a good starting recipe for Nosler 220 HPBT and N120. I've found data using N110, but nothing for N120. I've taken a liking to N120 with the 208 Amax, but I'm sitting on a bunch of the noslers.

I'm using a stock 9" AAC MPW with pistol gas system, H2 buffer, and AAC BCG. Lancer L5 mags.

VV data lists 200 gr FMJBT(Lapua) at 10.2 gr N120, 2.244 OAL and velocity of 1037 in a 14" barrel. I would consider that charge pretty close to make the 220 Nosler subsonic in a 16" gun. Perhaps a couple tenths more to start. I have used a similar number under some coated 200 gr LRN.
www.vihtavuori.com/en/reloading-data/ri ... g/-300-aac... and the link on paper ended there. You can finger it out I'm sure.

Sierra and Hornady both have good data for N120. In a pinch 1680 data will be a safe starting point, N120 is a bit slower so it is generally lower velocity/pressure for the same charge weight. For me it seems to take 5-10% more powder to get the same velocity
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Here are my N120 notes for the subsonic loads. YMMV depending on brass thickness, neck tension, usage of crimping and suppressed or not.

Hornady 225 BTHP
10.4gr - 10.1gr - 2.45 - 2.255 coal - 1060 to 1015 fps

And for the Lapua 200 FMJBT

10.4gr - 10.1gr - 2.10 - 2.20 coal - 1040 to 980 fps

Both these loads will BHO without suppressor on my Noveske 10" with Faxon lightweight BCG and JP SCS with the lightest spring (80lbs).
