Saw talk about the Speer 150 gr gold dots in the main section. Got to looking on Speer web site and noticed the Hot Core 130 gr. Was wondering if anyone tried these. Am considering a heavier bullet for my 16 inch 300BO. My 10 inch shoots 110 V-Max with great accuracy. Thought about the Barnes 120 Tac but to expensive. Comments or suggestions?

I'm pretty sure the expansion velocity is too high to be effective for a hunting round, but one of my subsonic plinking and squirrel rounds uses this projectile at 890 fps, over 5.7gn of trail boss, with an oal of 2.0". Very accurate out to 60 yards or so. This round was developed for my RAR.

I emailed Speer to see what the minimum fps for expansion is. Will post what I find out. Also told them if they could build a 110 grain gold dot with 1400 fps minimum expansion that they would sell allot. Probably not doable but thought I would ask.

Got a reply.

Rather than velocity we use a minimum kinetic energy for expansion on many of our rifle bullets that we make and for this your minimum would be 1000 ft/lbs for a deer sized target and about 1200 ft/lbs for bear and elk sized. With these in mind for minimums you should see great expansion results.

Did a quick data set in StrelokPro with a Speer 130 gr using hodgdon reloading data with H110, if I get 2000 fps out of the barrel, the data shows 1659 fps @100 yards, which should be good to go according to the reply I received from Speer. Time to get a box to test.
