Whitetail load

Post by eowen37 »

Looking to put together a load for Whitetail hunting this fall. Longest shot is 100 yards. Using barnes tac-tx 110gr. Have not decided on a powder but going to be Vihtavuori, either N105 or N110. Gun is suppressed ar w/ 10" barrel. Any advantages of one powder over the other?

N110 will give you about 10% more velocity before pressure signs.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Thank you, I was leaning towards N110 & this confirms it. I have been loading N120 topped w/ 180 grain speer for a sub sonic range/plinking load & have been very impressed with it for being quiet & what I would call clean for being suppressed.

I'm curious as to what a starting (and max) load would be for n110 as well. I saw it at my local mom and pop reload shop and thought for half a second about testing it out. I've seen several folks mention it here in the past.

Either way. I'd like to see what you are able to come up with. I'm still using Barnes TacTX 110's w/ H110 currently. no problems thus far.

Finished some testing yesterday. Gun is 10" sbr, FA bcg, AGB, carbine buffer, un-suppressed. Loads started at 15.0 grains n110, winchester small rifle primers & worked up with Barnes TAC TX 110gr, coal 2.240.

Best accuracy was at 16.0 gr = 1950 fps (sub moa). Got to 16.3 grains & the primers started to flatten, but no other pressure signs, = 1991 fps. Tried 16.6 grains (the powder was into the neck) speed dropped to 1984 fps & the primers were even more flat. No ejector or extractor marks. Was not comfortable shooting that load. Especially after seeing the speeds drop w/ the increase in charge. I seen others posting they were getting 18.5 grains of n110 in the case. Not sure how they are doing it, but I am not going to attempt it after seeing what was going on. Was hoping to get that bullet moving up over 2100 fps.
