200-230gr bolt action sub loads.

Post by iemerson »

There is a lot of load info for subsonic loads for semiautos out there. I have a RPR with a 17" 7 twist HHC 300 BLK barrel so I'm not worried about cycling and a lot sub loads out there will super in longer barrels. I'm looking for info using the whichever powder for max case fill, quietness, and accuracy in 16"-20" barrels with 200-230gr bullets. Thanks for any help!

What “pistol” powders do you have on hand?

I have had great luck with VV N105, Blue Dot and even Trail Boss.

I have some trailboss. I had heard it doesn't like to be compressed so I didn't consider it for heavy bullets. I don't have any other pistol powders. Was hoping to get ideas on a few to try.

I have used Trail Boss for subsonic loads. I use 5-6 grains. I have compressed a lot of loads and never had an issue but I make sure to not over do it either.

Trailboss and light bullets works fine. Trailboss and heavy bullets (200-230gr) won't work.

Fast powders make for quiet loads. You're probably going to want to add a pistol powder or two to your options. I, too, have had success with N105 and Blue Dot. Next will be 300-MP.

I shoot my 265's all the time using Trail Boss. It compresses it but I have yet to have any problems.

The best accuracy for my rem 700 has been Viht N-120 and IMR-4227.
Next most accurate is Viht N-105 and it is the quietest.
I shoot mostly powder coated 240 grain cast bullets sub-sonic.

N-120= 10.0 grains

Imr-4227 =9.2 grains

N-105 = 6.9 grains

With these I seat the them a little into the lands and back off 15 thousands at a time till the accuracy gets the best.
With the bullets I use the most that came out to 2.215 using imr-4227.
Close to moa at 100 yards.
Been using Imr-4227 the most lately since it meters better than the others and less expensive.
Imr-4227 shoots my powder coated cast 150gc bullets moa.
