I know everyone says not to use them, but I have a box of them, and I haven't shot my 30-30 in years... So I did a mock-up and in my RARR and OAL would have to be 1.960. So, I am thinking that maybe 17gr of CFEBlk would be a place to start and top out probably at 18.5gr. I wish I had QuickLoad to see what the pressures might be but I don't. So thoughts, ideas, am I going to put an eye out you think? Yes I have other bullets that would probably work much better, but they are sitting there staring at me saying load me

Which bullet, Marlin or Winchester?

I worked with the Winchester 30-30 version a couple years ago. It can work short range really well. Impact velocity should be 1700 fps plus for good results. With a MV of 2000 fps that give you about 150 yards if I remember right.

Doubt CFE will work, not likely to be able to get enough powder under the bullet and it's too slow. 1680 would be better but may still come up short, it's generally my go to powder for this weight bullet.

I used 18+ grains of 300 MP to get 2000 in a 16" barrel, because of case capacity issues with the bullet needing to be seated so deep..

Has very good accuracy potential.

I missed that one in my search. Yes the 30-30 one, I don't think the 308 Marlin one would work out of my 30-30 worth a hoot. I will read that thread real good and see what I can come up with.

Looking at Hodgdon data, I'd start with the 168 gr bullet and work up a load myself. (look at their site to verify this)

Looking at Accurate Powder, they offer some loads for 155 Grs Sierra HPBT (look at their site to verify this)

The difference in seating depth reduces usable case capacity from Hodgdon's 168 BTHP data by about 20%. According to QL, you could go up to 17 grains of H110 with the 168 HPBT @ 2.23" and still be slightly under max pressure. The starting load of 14.5 grains with the FTX at 1.960" is approaching max, and 15 puts you over.

Be careful out there.

I’ll take this a step further, most of those starting loads aren’t even possible to use, you will need too much compression to make them fit under the FTX bullet.

The Lil’gun, H110/296 loads will fit, but as bangbang pointed out, pressure can be an issue.

CFE BLK will allow about 18 grains, and will net an operating range of the bullet of about 10 yards due to low velocity.

If you search the forum, you will find that a lot of people have tried and failed with this bullet. With care it can be a good choice. The main thing is to pay attention to the COL to keep it from jamming, and to know your load density.

Then if you want to use it for hunting vs target make sure that you use it within a range that impact will be above 1700 fps.

Yup, 168 Amax has same problem not enough powder to make a difference. The MX FTX is same but thicker skin and cannular moved.

The difference between this bullet and a 168 Amax is that this one can be loaded to magazine length or more and will allow at least 2 more grains of powder netting over 125 fps. Over the FTX.

Base to ogive length on the bullet makes a big difference.
