Optimal load for 300 Blackout

Post by Dolomite_Supafly »

Something that has intrigued me for a while is certain loads that seem to shoot well in almost every type of gun they are shot out of. Federal Gold Medal Match is an example and they have always shot better than any other factory ammunition as well as out shoot most hand loads. A well established accurate load for 223 is 24.5-24.7 grains of Varget under a 69g bullet. I know it has shot better than almost any other out of ever 223 rifle I own. I have read about that recipe for a very long time.

And because these loads work well in most guns it seems like it is the load itself more so than what gun.

I think it would be great if we can figure out a couple of loads that seem to work in everything.

Post three things about your most accurate hand load.
1. Bullet weight and type
2. Powder charge, type and weight
3. Overall length of cartridge

I think if we have too many other specifics we will have just too many variables to try to figure out an optimal load.

I have a 16" Encore, a 10" Contender, a 16" Savage rifle, a 3.5" bolt action pistol and an 8.5" AR all in 300 Blackout so I could easily test once there seems to be a patter emerging.

Please, before using any data here, verify it against published data before shooting.

168 grain Polymer tipped Hornady
8 grains of IMR 4227
2.283 OAL

It is a subsonic load but shoots extremely well for me. I will be adding more subsonic loads as I can.

Barnes 110gr black tip
20.0gr H110
2.25" OAL

Accurate in many of my rifles. Mild crimp with Lee crimp die. (My Ruger Takedown SR556 in Blackout does prefer 20.1gr H110, but will give "OK" accuracy with the 20.0gr H110 load). CCI 400 primers are used in all but the above Ruger...it prefers the Wolf/Tula KVB223M primers (similar to CCI 41's).
