S&B Brass....

Post by KyleC »

Anyone have issues seating primers?

I'm using an RCBS hand primer with a .223 shellholder.

Wolf SRM primers. They seat fine in everything but S&B

Ideas? Suggestions? They don't look like they have crimped primer pockets

Yes, they seem to have a small crimp.
Swage the pocket and they will seat fine.
I may have been on the losing side, but, I'm not convinced it was the wrong side.

I swage every piece of .223 brass and put a light chamfer around the pocket just for the occasional out of spec primer or pocket.

This is .300blk.

I ran a few through my super swage. NO change

I'm beginning to think I may have used the wrong shellholder. It's like the case head has been mashed down. The primers are high and/or deformed from the priming rod.

The 300BlkOut is still based on the .223 case so the shell holder for .223 should work fine.

Seating on a press or a hand held tool? If on a press, what brand/model?
I would look at the alignment of the press and die adjustment.

Never used s&b 300blk brass, but their primer pockets are tight in pretty much everything else.

Thanks, that's good to know.

However, I ran some through my super swage and nothing changed

S&B is on the list of "bad" brass because of excessive neck thickness. Unless you are going to turn the necks, I wouldn't waste a lot of time on it and move on to something more compatible.

Question... How could brass that carried a .308 diameter bullet and fired out of a blackout chamber all of a sudden develop neck thickness too thick to re use?

I'm thinking the S&B listed in the no good brass would have been .556 converted brass, not .300AAC head stamped stuff.
