5.56 Bullet question

Post by Flatliner »

I went though quite a few google searches and couldn't find an answer to this question:

What commercially available bullet has the most similar ballistic profile to the 62gr steel core bullet used in M855.

The reason for the question is that I want to load my 'plinking/practice' ammo for my latest build to be as close as possible to M855. I know I could just BUY M855 but that isn't really the point.

I load the hdy 62gr fmj same as I load the ss109. No idea what the bc for the ss109 is though

Why not use the M855 pulled bullets. They show up really cheep every now and then.
My next thought would be as mentioned above . . . the Hornady's. The B.C. would be so close that it would not really matter just as long as you got the velocity similar. --- pruhdlr

This would drive the liberal know nothing DW Shultz nuts that said background checks for ammo.

Never understood the desire to "recreate milspec".....

In My experience those 62g ss109 bullets suck. And their price has gone up a ridiculous amount since that issue a few years ago. There are many other comparably priced 223 projectiles out there that are much better performers.

844 powder is great for 556/223. It's nearly identical to H335. Pulldown versions of It are not much cheaper than getting "new", these days though. A few bucks more for new is worth It for consistency.

Then me explaining it likely wouldn't help.

Thanks for the links, I hadn't realized that I could find those components at reasonable prices. For the purpose of what I want to do here, pulled bullets are fine.

You don't have to answer if you do not want to but why steel core bullets? I bought a can of them 8-10 years ago. They dent up my steel targets, are useless for hunting. Mine are even tracers that set stuff on fire.

My long term storage/SHTF ammo for 5.56 is M855. I don’t necessarily want steel core but do want a plinking/practice round that shares a very close zero to the M855

Personally,I do not find the M855 useless for hunting. Put one squarely on the shoulder of a giant hog,or I suspect a big northern deer and see what happens. Then there is absolutely any CNS shot.
Not my choice for "normal" hunting conditions . . BUT . . for survival,or SHTF type of hunting (2 or 4 leg creatures) these would be my choice also. Actually . . . that is why I have a can set aside. --- pruhdlr
