230 Bergers and the 300 Whisper/Blackout

Post by hoser »

I have been playing with the Berger 230s for a while now and might have finally settled on a load.

Pointed and HbN coated Berger Hybrid 230 HPBT
Lapua 300 BLK Brass
Federal Primer
Vhit N-110, 9.4 gns
Loaded OAL 2.393, my comparator length of 1.695

Center to center was well under 3/4 inch with vertical spread being about 0.6 inches.

Average velocity of 1077 with a high of 1085 and a low of 1074.

Rifle
Bighorn TL-3
Bartlien 1-8, 16.1 inches
300 Hush reamer, made by PTG in 2008
Accuracy International AX Chassis
Schmidt & Bender 5-25
Thunderbeast 338 Ultra

Very quiet. Not quite Hollywood quiet, but close. I will post more pics and video later tonight.

Looks really good.
When those totally ignorant of firearms make laws, you end up with totally ignorant firearm laws.

Nice shooting Hoser.

I've enjoyed using that bullet also. The Berger hybrids all seem to shoot well as subs.

Also interesting to see what happens when some one take the cartridge seriously and puts a rifle together with accuracy in mind. Looking forward to seeing more :P
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

Man that's tight. Nice build as well. Make sure you post pics of that rifle.

I am sure I could get it quieter if I switched powders, but my accuracy is excellent and the ES/SD is so low with N-110, I am tempted to just stop experimenting and go with it.

Here is the video of it. Shooting at a 6x6 plate at 300 yards. Camera set up just like a sound meter would be for a no-shit test.

You really ought to try tinstar in that combo.

Something like 5.5 start and max @ 6.0 gr @ 2.40 coal. Velocity should be in the 900-1000s and the power itself is also much quieter.

Also you get a really good case fill approx 85-100%

How do you like that TL3 action for the Blackout ? Any issues ?

The only thing you need to watch out for with Tin Star and a bullet that weight, is that you can get into very high pressures. Flattened primers are not uncommon, yo can even pop one if you try

But yes it's a great option for subs. Just don't tell every one that it works like Trail Boss, but only takes up about 60% of the space.

100% Correct. Which is why you'd need to load them long @ 2.40 -- I'm positive if you were to load 6 gr @ 2.26 you'd get fairly high pressures.
