Ok reading up on annealing process. Total noob on this guys, but I have a question from what I've been seeing.
Looks like most are either forming, cutting then resizing then annealing
or
cutting form/sizing then annealing.
Does anyone Anneal before forming or sizing and if not why?
Seems to me if your softening the brass you would want to do it before forming?
I'll add my interest is in 223 brass formed to 300 blk
Thanks for the input.

This is what I do as well.plant.one wrote:if i were to make my own brass i would anneal after cutting, but before forming.

anneal
form
trim
On other calibers where OAL is allot different I do same. On calibers like my 6.5x63 I anneal then resize.

....came across this article on the 65Creedmoor forum that some might find interesting, especially considering the lower cost as an alternative to the $300+ systems currently out there.... hope it will load for you.

Never annealed, use LC brass I chop and form on my own.
Don't see the need- annealing is largely to avoid split necks
and 300 cases fail with loose pockets long before necks split.
Supposed to help with accuracy, but I could see no effect.

Anneal before you size. Otherwise you'll be sizing again as the cases shrink from annealing.

loose pockets? Not familiar with the term.AR-300 wrote:Never annealed, use LC brass I chop and form on my own.

Annealing is interesting to me because the longer brass life on some of my premium brass and possibly making some 300 with all the 223 I've collected over time.

Re: Annealing before or after forming? and why?
Brass work hardens. Sizing after heat treating takes a bit away from the annealing. If you are making blk from 556 you are cutting off the annealed portion of the case.
Annealing helps insure consistent neck tension.

loose primer pockets. old cases get loose and spit our primers that will jam up the action.sharpshooter33 wrote:loose pockets? Not familiar with the term.
Never had a problem with neck tension either
