Newbie question

Post by Peanut »

So I built my first 300blk this year. Been having fun with it. Now I want to get into reloading. I have started buying stuff. Even found some W296 at cabelas the other day. I have some brass ready to go.
My question is what and where should I be looking for as far as projectiles go?
I am shooting a 16' carbine gas system and have no interest in shooting subs, supers only.
Thanks for any help and I know this will be the first of many questions.
One other thing, right now just wanting some plinking stuff. I will work on hunting stuff as I get more experience.

Plinking supers: 150 hornady fmj, cheaper in big lots
just a tiny bit cheaper, but they suck and aren't worth it IMHO, are M80 147 mil pulled bullets
they don't group. period.

Hunting you will want pricier 125s, shop around and read up on bullet performance

I buy mostly blems from places such as shootersproshop.com when available.
The 110g varmegeddon (sp) at $18/100 is cheap enough for me to consider it a plinker.

Speer 125 TNT is a great plinking round but cheaper rounds can be found. I bought a bunch of over-run Nosler 110 varmegeddon rounds but after they run out I'll be switching to the Speer TNTs.

Hornady 150 FMJ's can be found. I shoot 147 M80 FMJ's for plinking. The prices on these have gone up lately but Wideners has mil-spec 145 and 147 FMJ's and TopBrass has them also. Some other suppliers have them too. They make a nice plinking round loaded with 15.5-16.6 grains of H110/Win 296 at velocities from 1850-1950 fps in a 16" carbine. Other bullets I load are Hornady 110 V-Max and Nosler 125 BT's for accuracy or hunting.http://www.topbrass-inc.com/reloading-s ... gory_id=28

Hornady new 150s are 18.5 cents in a case lot https://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm ... |1090|1576

and don't expect the mil spec stuff to group.
here are some examples from a batch of M80s on left
I was wondering why the OALs were all over the place
and the crimp grooves vary a lot too

"right now just wanting some plinking stuff"

There is your answer. Shop around for the best price (include shipping charges). For 'sonics', look in the 110 to 150 or so weight range.

AR-300 has given some very good advise above.

Also, look at cast bullets with powder coating for lower costs, long term or higher volume. If you don't cast now, the initial expense will take longer to defray. But it is an option.

Load with care and enjoy,
