Round for home defense

Post by 1975carman »

Would you recommend heavy subs suppressed (something that expands like lehigh defense stuff), or supers suppressed (like barnes 110 vortex)? If you know of another round that you'd recommend, please do so. Not sure if any military/police has "adopted" the 300, but if they did, what do you think they'd use?

00 Buck. If you have kids in another room or live close to another's house, #6 steel turkey load. Have yet to meet a magical tactical human being that can be startled awake from a dead sleep and shoot accurately enough with a rifle to do any d@mn good. My opinion only.

Agree with the shotgun statement above but since we're talking 300 BLK...

Disclaimer: I’m no hunter, and fairly new to firearm ownership (10yrs) and reloading (<1yr). That being said I like to read and research to an OCD level. Here’s a good article I like to reference:
http://www.ar15.com/ammo/project/Self_D ... /index.htm

I’d say there are 4 primary goals for a SD round:
  • 1) Make the biggest hole possible
    2) Penetrate deep enough to hit the vitals (12” min according to FBI)
    3) Dispense as much energy in the target
    4) Be accurate enough (I’d prefer <1” @ 50yds)
The above makes no consideration shooting through barriers or over penetration after going through the BG. Those complicate things greatly and always remember there is no perfect bullet.

My choices, based on deer hunting data and bullet testing in ballistics media & wet newspaper, here is what I would chose:

Subs
  • Lehigh Defense ME 194gr
    Lehigh Defense CF 174gr
Outlaw State Bullets 220-240gr expanding subsonic (if they feed reliably)
Super
  • Barnes 110gr Black Tip
    Lehigh Defense 140gr controlled fracturing
    Horady 125gr SST
Hornady 150gr SST (looks like great expansion but only 10” penetration in paper)
    Nossler 125gr Green Tip
    Speer 125gr TNT

I use the 194ME for my home defense, 110gr blacktips in the spare mag as backup.

I wanna know how many people have vitals that are 12" deep

I use a 150gr round.. dont have kids. Homes not super close to mine
and plan on putting multiple rounds in my target

Primary gun is glock 23.. so if my 300 is pulled you are either running or in need of more holes

And yes I say running because Nobody caught will survive a assault on my home

My "night stand" friend is actually my Colt Mustang .380.

My kind of guy; G23 backed up by 300 BLK rifle. Put a good expanding bullet in each, put the bullet where it needs to go, and all will be well.

My G23 has 165gr Speer Gold Dots. My 300BLK has Barnes 110 TTSX. The Speer is always right at the top of the FBI tests. I haven't seen FBI data yet on the 300.

I agree that my 16" 300 BLK rifle would not be my 1st go to gun if I'm reaching for something fast. That'll be the S&W M&P .45 w/ Winchester 230gr Bonded PDX1.

If I get around to building a SBR w/suppressor, I may change that order.

I agree and disagree.... while i have 2 sbrs and a suppressor
a .223 and 300 i still prefer my glock or pistol for multiple reasons
easy of firing. As in one handed or funny body position
Try laying on your bed and pretending someone is coming in your bed room
What is easier to get a round or 5 of with?

Also a sbr with out a can in a room has been known to make ears bleed but then you add the can and you are right back to what i dont want a 16" barrel

Now if i am clearing my home or on the offensive with someone in my home
my sbr is the shit if you know how to do it properly

But once again we are off topic...

Bottom line good round with out over penatration
is needed... subs may have a issue with that as the lack of expansion

If you cant test on balistic gel get a few thick phone books
and soak them in water then take them out and shoot them
at the rough distance. You believe you will be shooting
should give you a close guess at what you need

A 45 with hollow points will not go through a 2" wet phone book
shot @ 7-10 yards for reference
