180 gr SST

Post by Swampdrake42 »

I'm new to the form, and this subject may have been covered already. But I cant find it anywhere. I'm new to 300 Black out and wanted to load some 180 gr Hornady SST that I have for my 308. I have found no data on the web for this round, and anything close looks to close to max load that I can tell. Most data I find I believe to be somewhat off. From what iv read on other forms. My upper is being built so I dont have it yet, but I'm loading some starting loads to have when I do get it. Iv been loading for about 6 years, so I'm not green. I load a lot of pistol, 308, and 223. But 300 seems to be different, any help would be greatly appreciated. My upper is 16in barrel with a 1:8 twist

What's the intended use?

Sub or super?

What is the gas tube length?

Depending on your configuration, that bullet can be loaded basically from 1000-1900 fps. So with a bit more detail better help can be provided.

Or you could just look in the Hornady manual for a start on supers.

Plinking, hunting, my upper has a pistol length gas system on it. I was thinking super, I'm not going to suppress it at this time. I mainly picked this round cause I load it for my 308 as well, and it is a great hog killer. Thanks for the help

For target it will work great, for hunting, it probably will have a real short range if you want expansion. 1900 FPS will take a bit of imagination and part of that will depend on how long you can load it. Below 1800 you might not get much.

With pistol length there will be more powders for subs, but for supers that you can go to max fill and velocity without getting in trouble:
N120
Shooters world Blackout
1680
and CFE BLK.

10 grains on the low end and whatever fills the case when the bullet is not touching the lands. 18-19 grains depending on the powder.

I have not used the 180 SST, so I do not know if it can be loaded to mag length. I have used all of the 178's and no problem with any of those.

If you use CFE get some compression on it, your ES will drop significantly.

I'll be interested in how that bullet does, The 155 SST works very well.

Thanks Dellet for the info, I think I should just leave the 180 sst for the 308. I'll start looking at lighter rounds. What would you shoot, load for a deer/ hog hunting round.

I am really looking hard at the new 150 Speer Gold dot for Blackout. So far it looks really promising. It's shown to be very accurate and expands well at 1650 FPS.

Ballistically it holds it's own with 125 and even 110 grain bullets based on shots inside 200 yards and speeds 150 @2200 fps, 125 @2300 fps and 110 @ 2400fps. At 200 yards it has about 25% more energy than the 110 Barnes.

The problem with all these bullets is the cartridge. At 200 yards your drop is about an inch every 10 yards, the bullets will still perform, but your range needs to be right on.

With a 150 yard zero you're 1.5" high at 100, 1.5" low at 175, 4" low at 200 and 20" low at 300. Just need to be a bit better figuring your distance and dope. For me a 200 yard shot is a rare opportunity so it would not matter.

Thanks, ill look into those, iv always loved a 150 gr. Growing up my first rifle was a 30-30, I always shot 150gr core locks, soft points. My favorite 308 round is a 165 spbt. I cant find any 110 0r 125 ish 30 cal bullets around where I live at. I can get my hands on some 147 gr pulled M80. Have you ever loaded these for plinking, I Can only find lil gun powder right now, without ordering 8lb of something. So most of my loads will be worked up with this. Thanks for the info buddy

if you can't find any 110 - 125 gr bullets locally, why don't you just order some from one of the many suppliers like Midway, MidSouth, Graf & Sons, Natchez, etc.....? they are also probably a lot cheaper on line than over the counter.

Beware, Supreme Court just gave the green light to make online stores collect tax from all states. Be good to compare local vs online, provided you find bullets on local store shelves.
