Handi rifle

Post by hobbesy »

Hi All,

I have had 16" handi rifle for a year or so and am trying to get a decent and accurate subsonic load for it, I've been using 165gn RNFP from a local company and using about 5gns of Unique which is ok.

I would like to use a heavier bullet (say Lee's 230gn) indoor with a suppressor (want to keep it about 1000 foot speed) and I'm sure you guys can help out. I'm also getting loads of lead in the barrel, is this just the way it is and it needs cleaning out or am I doing somthing wrong?

Many thanks from over the pond

Please put in your location or country, in your profile, so we can best tailor our responses to you.

1. Only use powder coated bullets. Either buy them or make them if you can. As an alternative use a dip lube like Lee Liquid Alox.
2. Use bullets sized to .310 or .311" to get a better seal with the bore.
3. Flair the case mouth to avoid shaving the bullet when it is seated. Use a Lee Universal Case expanding Die. You can get accessory expander plugs from Noe Bullet Molds that fit the Lee Die.
http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php? ... 2rvjacgn45.
If you use a Lyman "M" die, use one for the .32-20 as you will be loading larger than normal 30 caliber bulets.
4. For indoor use, you do not need heavy bullets.
Keep checking this site for when they make another run of their excellent 123g Zombie bullets. http://lucky13bullets.com/index.php?mai ... 20a&page=2
Just a few examples, if they are available to you, where live.

You should have good results with any powder coated, flat based, .310-.311 bullet, seated out as far as possible, using a pistol powder.
Also: Powder coated bullets will keep your suppressor cleaner.
And: Don't waste your time with the Lee 230. I have had two molds and neither of them were accurate. The bullets are undersized and they don,t have enough contact area with the barrel and the boat tail is unnecessary. The Noe 311-230-FN (PB), (without gas check), http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_in ... 2rvjacgn45 is everything the Lee should be, although the nose is a little larger than needed for Powder Coating). I also have had good results with the Noe 311-150-SP (PB).

I know you said you wanted to use heavy bullets, but the Hornady 90 XTP shoot really well in my Handi rifle, I think 4.5 grains of trail boss, they are even more fun when you load them super sonic!

WELCOME!

There is a website called graybeard outdoors. These guys wrote the book on Handi rifles. There is a wealth of info over there.

I have one of these rifles too and I have not had the best luck with accuracy and subs until I started using Hornady 208 and A1680 powder. :)

Well be careful then, cause the heavier the bullet, the more energy it will carry... anything 200g+ will probably more then double your FPE limit at 1700 fps!!

No worries understood!

The suggested 90g XTP and trail boss powder makes a fine sub loading if you can get them!!

18.1 Grains of 300MP, I can't remember the COAL, but it hits a milk jug like a full power .308 load.
