Remington 700 SPS 300BLK 1:7 twist accuracy with super-sonic loads?

Post by shootzen »

I've come across complaints of the Rem 700 300 BLK not being very accurate with super-sonic loads, perhaps due to the 1:7 twist barrel. I'm curious what experiences people have had with it. I'm interested in loads 110 ~ 125 gr bullets.

Remington 120 UMC, 200 yards, 1/6 twist 2430 fps 291,600 rpm bullet spin. Five shots and a called flyer.

Hornady 208 ELD hand load. 200 yards 1/10 twist 1050 fps, 75,600 rpm bullet spin.

If it's not accurate, it's not the twist.
300 Blackout, not just for sub-sonics.

The .300bo doesn't have enough velocity to over stabilize. Sounds more like excuses than complaints.

Mine shoots 100 grain, 110 grain 125 grn , 147 grn , 225 grain all very well groups all hover around 1 moa some smaller and som a bit larger like 1.5 . The only bullet it really dont shoot well is the 208 grn amax its more around 2 moa .
Im talking 5 shot groups at 100 yds

Doing some load developement and these were my best 5 shot groups at 100 yards. 125gr tmk under 17.5gr of 4227 loaded to 2.22" OAL. Average velocity from 12.5" suppressed barrel. Rem 700 sps 5r.

Depends on what your definition of accurate is.
Shooting MOA or less concistantly is not a problem with 125's with handloads in good conditions. (5 shots)

Win 296 powder and your favorite 110/125gr bullet.....done.

The only situation which would not benefit from faster-than-normal twist would be precision, long range shooting. A faster twist can magnify the imbalance which is inherent to bullet eccentricity. The bullet can sometimes yaw as a result and give pooraccuracy. In this case, the slowest twist possible for the velocity achieved is the rule of thumb.

For 300BLK though, where few of us shoot past 300 yards, even in supersonic, a faster twist is more versatile than a slower one typically. I have had good luck with 150gr., 208gr. and 245gr. cast pills. (Super, Sub, Sub) Hoping to try the 125gr ones soon.
