Re: Custom Savage .300blk Build
did you buy just the action or cannibalize it from another rifle?
I'd love to build something from scratch, but the only savage actions I can find right now are target (no mags) actions.

Best thing is to just buy a used rifle and part it out. You'll likely have less $$ in a whole used rifle than buying just an action.BuckySWT wrote:did you buy just the action or cannibalize it from another rifle?

Re: Custom Savage .300blk Build
The action came new from Jim Briggs @ Northland Shooters Supply. He can get just about anything you'd need, but it's not really that cheap. Since i wanted a lefty and didn't want to wait forever I went to him and had it in about a week. Finding a cheap donor gun would be the best way to do it on a budget though...
Re: Custom Savage .300blk Build
Visited with my class 3 dealer, Immortal Arms, today to pick up my .22 suppressor and got some visitation with my thunderbeast. Just a little more gun porn.
Other fun stuff.

yeah...I just found him via the savage forum.Ryan327 wrote:The action came new from Jim Briggs @ Northland Shooters Supply. He can get just about anything you'd need, but it's not really that cheap. May need to go this route. Have my grandpa's old 110L in 30-06 and it will still shoot ragged holes with the right ammo.
Love the action and trigger on that gun...not sure if he had a trigger job done or not, but it's just this side of "hair trigger"
so the chassis is built to take the AICS mags...cool.

Re: Custom Savage .300blk Build
BuckySWT,
Gunshack is another vendor on the site that has a SAV model 10 Hog Hunter 223 for $410.. Its blued, but gives you a functioning rifle for the price..
There's not a lot of value in the take-offs, but they do help recoup some of the other costs..
I'm also on that forum, and suffer from "Savage-itis" and keep a few actions on-hand for projects.. So far I've built a Blued and Stainless actioned 300 BLK Varmint Barrels, and the next project will be a sporter barrel built on a Stevens donor rifle I got from the classifieds.. There's plenty of routes to success, just some more expensive than others..
Aside from tweaking the ejection, I'll have approximately $400-500 net in the gun and barrel before optics and any bolt tweaks..
Starting from scratch, long term keeper rifle, mounted to a nice chassis/action as above, specific project in mind, I'd be looking at Jim's actions too.. I've bought from him, and he's a knowledgable resource.
Just wanting to get into the game at a reasonable price point... find a savage/stevens 223 donor, disassemble and sell parts, then built to your liking..
One other benefit to a NEW, undesignated action(new factory action, never assembled into a rifle)... You can actually start it as a pistol build, once the pistol build is complete, if you want to make it a rifle, you still can, but your order must be Pistol first, Rifle second, the other route(Rifle->Pistol) makes you legally liable for making a SBR.

Re: Custom Savage .300blk Build
If you get a xtra bolt head in 308 you could make a switch barrel set up. There are 458 socom barrels avaible for the savage rifles. All you need is a barrel nut wrench, and a 308 mag
It looks like my set up,( great minds think alike). I think you got the bolt on the wrong side, I just don't know how you could get that wrong.
The more you use that xlr chassis the more you are going to like it.
It will take a few trys to get it set right. You will think you have it right, then make a little change you will find out you were wrong. Length pull and comb height are basic, move the cheek piece more forward or back , don't forget the pad hieght adj. When it all comes together it will go from feeling good to great

Re: Custom Savage .300blk Build
I'm having a lot of feeding and ejection issues....guess i'll need to try another extractor since the ball alone has no effect.
