Thompson Center Conpass

Post by rlandry6 » Wed Oct 17, 2018 1:20 pm

Picked one up Sunday and a local big box outdoor score in 308Win. Rifle was on sale for $274, the store gave a $25 gift card with it and there's a $50 rebate from Thomson(Smith & Wesson). That knocks the price down to $199.
5R rifling, pillar bedded action, free floating barrel, threaded muzzle and a 1MOA guarrantee. Seemed like a pretty good deal to me. Now I'm angsting over what glass to put on it. I have Sightron on everything I currently own and I'm pretty happy with them. I do have a Vortex red dot on a Glock, but I have no experience with their long gun optics.
I have S-TACS on two ARs and another in the box that I ordered for a RPR, so I'm thinking I could go with less scope on one of the ARs, maybe the Blackout, and move one of them over to the .308. For the pricepoint, the Sightron scopes are really hard to beat. Thinking along that strategy, what would be the minimal glass you would put on a Blackout AR shooting supers?

At $199 you should have bought three or four.

As for min power on a blackout scope, never go below one. What kind of shooting do you do with it?

It will be 100-200 yard. It's a carbine length rifle, not a SBR.

Well, you know what they say about opinions. Personally, I want to go up to at least 9x if shooting at 200 yards, especially if I may have to count antler points to stay legal. But my eyes aren't what they used to be, either. I've been happy with the Leupold VX-R Patrol and Mark AR scopes.

The S-Tac 3-16x would be good on that.

I've been looking at all the brands and watching sales and I keep going back to the Sightrons, I guess because that's what I have on everything, and for the price point, seem to be the most bang for the buck.
It's a tossup between the 4-20 and the 3-16.

Look at Leupold. They make excellent scopes.

I go that direction because they work.

For the range, a simple 1.5-4X or a 2-7X could be ideal. I have one of each.
