16.5" Rem 700 300BLK build

Post by rjacobs »

Almost got this gun complete. Just waiting on a scope. Probably going with Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x42 which is what I sized the rings to.

I wasnt trying to break the bank with this build since this was one of the $495 Walmart guns with a $40 mail in rebate. Looked a lot at stocks and just couldnt bring myself to spend 600+ on a stock for a gun that would be used mainly as a range gun with maybe a little hunting thrown in. Do I think this Bodys stock is bomb proof, hardly, but for what it cost its not bad. I still need to get the pillars installed, but without them everything feeds and functions properly.

16.5" Rem 700 AAC-SD 300BLK
Boyds Tacticool stock(came inlet for Badger M5 DBM bottom metal)
PTG M5 Stealth DBM bottom metal
AICS 10 round mag
AAC 51t Brakeout(I dont think this gun needs a brake, but this one was on sale)
EGW Heavy Duty 7075 20moa base
Burris Xtreme 30mm low rings
factory trigger(I may throw a Timney in, but this factory trigger is actually not terrible)

Im pretty happy with how it came out for the money I have into it. With the scope I will be in this whole setup about 1500 bucks which aint bad.

How much was the stock and bottom metal? I would like to upgrade from the cheesy Houge stock mine came with, but like you said i dont want to sink a ton of money into whats basically a range toy

nice . I understand what your saying about breaking the bank I looked at what I wanted , then bought what I needed. I chose to go with a bell and carlson stock and apply more money toward an optic it was the right choice for me , hopefully you will have as much fun as I have had with mine .

Midway has the pre-inlet boyds stocks on sale for 102 and the bottom metal was 100. It's the ptg m5 stealth. Inlet was perfect, didn't have to trim at all. The aics mags are like 40 depending on where you buy from. Ive got 900 until the gun as it sits and will have another 600 until an optic unless i find what i want used for cheaper.

Great info. Thanks

I looked on midway... It says the stock is wood. It doesnt look like wood. Can you confirm?

Its laminate wood, yes, but its painted(decent paint IMO). For this gun, I dont think its a negative. Is this a bullet proof, ultra light weight stock that will take recoil of a 338 Lapua, certainly not, but for this gun, for me, shooting probably 99% subsonics at a range(I dont hunt) this stock will be "good enough". Im under no illusions of what this stock is and what it isnt. The forend doesnt really flex any either, but I will probably open up the barrel channel a little bit more anyway.

The next cheapest stock I found was the B&C Medalist Style 2 at around 250-300 bucks, but it couldnt be had pre-inlet for the M5 bottom metal. Most places I called wanted between 75-100 for the inlet and then all of them said they wouldnt do it without also bedding the action for another 100. That turns a 300 stock into a 500 stock, which gets into Manners and McMillan money(which CAN be bought pre-inlet for M5 bottom metal for the same 550 bucks).

Overall I was trying not to break the bank with this build since I already have a few other 3000+ dollar bolt guns and I just didnt feel like, for the purpose of this gun(subsonics inside of 100 yards) that I needed to go full bore on it.

Is installing the pillars something a gunsmith should do or is it "DIY"?
