I got the first couple boxes yesterday, and more will trickle in for the rest of the month. I usually just don't shop, so I don't impulse buy by not looking. That all changes about the Tuesday before Thanksgiving...

I've been sitting on a matched set of fully populated upper/lower receivers for a couple years. Just didn't have any ambition to build it out since I'd gotten my AR10. All the short action stuff pales in comparison to the big brothers, but then the nagging (j/k!) won me over. I've also got the itch to do some more product development and this just worked out.

It's a 458 socom barrel from Satern and marketed by Brownells. Marty's given his blessing to the outfit who made this collaboration possible, so it's a legit 458 chamber and the bolt is made to proper specs. Price was pretty good too, but I like dealing with Brownells especially since they have a lifetime warranty on everything now. If it hadn't been for that, I'd have gone with Tony via Tromix. Satern is also a barrel I haven't gotten my hands on yet and wanted to check out. Lots of good reviews, and I must say the barrel is pretty nice looking! We'll see how it shoots by next weekend if I get my wish.

What attracted me to the 458 was the KE of the round at short range. This is essentially a .45-70 in an autoloader. With the kick (watch some videos, these puppies kick), I figured I'd want a little extra weight in the gun, so I went with a PRS stock again. I also really liked the feel of the PRS I have on the AR10 while I was hunting with it in my climbing tree stand. PRS gives the option to add a thicker recoil pad too, but I don't think that'll be needed.

Bead blasted the barrel (I know, I need a new left glove  ):

Now it gets fun...

The ejection port needs to be opened up quite a bit to clear the case. 458 uses a 308 size head with a rebated edge. It's a FAT pig of a round to be sent through the '15's upper.

First step was to hog it out on the mill:

Then I blended and contoured the opening with a die grinder. This profile isn't totally true to the print for the upper mods, but I feel better about the tapered edge above the front lug than I would with a big radius. If I ever run subs through this, I might need to revisit that, but for now I'm going to be focused on supers.

As they say in basket ball; nothing but net!

Still need a FDE MOE+ grip, but since I'm waiting on bullets to start loading that's not a big deal. I'm also not sure what I'll do for an optic. I might just put one of my Conquests on it since those are pretty big zoom and good for accuracy testing.
