When looking for an optic, your job may qualify you for the Vortex Military/LEO/First Responder discount program which would give you a _HEFTY_ discount on their MSRP for any of their scopes or red dots. Look into it. Only downside is that you have to order from them and it could take up to a couple of months for them to get an item in stock and ship.

Not to badmouth Vortex and their discount, but 40% off MSRP is only about $20-30 bucks off actual street price for the cheaper items they sell.

True and I wouldn't use it for cheaper stuff (I would buy the cheaper stuff on the used market) but it was an extra $200 in my pocket at the time I bought a scope for my .308 and if you're looking at their Razor line it can be pretty significant. Me, I'm always looking to shave bucks off everything I buy... It adds up.

It's nice of them to offer it. I've had a couple friends use it and were very happy with their purchases.
I've only gone cheap even on my expensive scopes (Zeiss). I find them for half (street) price, so even 40% off list isn't in my ballpark.
Just gotta know where to look and be open to jumping on a deal when encountered.

Spot on! These two are the ones that determine quality and price of a build. The BCG and handguard/rail can also significantly increase price, but not really the quality in my opinion. BCG is only relevant if you want to go adjustable (Gemtech or Bootleg, for example) for use with supressors. A free-float rail is preferred by many and can cost significant money, but enables great flexibility with mounting slings, lights, lasers, and other accessories. These are particularly important for hunting, especially hog hunting at night.
FYI, I'm up the road an hour or so just north of Temple if you wanted to drop by some time and check out some options.

Good advice already given...
Build it yourself, its easy and you will appreciate it more...I personally will never buy another AR.
Good barrel, good trigger, good glass and possibly an upgraded strength upper receiver...
Couple suggestions.

Since you have the money: A beefier upper receiver can improve accuracy by supporting the barrel better and reducing shooter induced deflection that can cause point of impact shift.
