Subsonic against steel???

Post by eastern_hunter » Tue May 19, 2015 11:26 pm

Am curious Guys, anyone shoot 220 or 225 gr OTMs against steel? Did you see projectiles break up or bounce?

Have some older T1 steel poppers and IPSC target centers that would be nice to shoot for practice if bounces are not a predictable result!

Thanks

i rocked a bunch of 220's off steel plates at 75 yds and there was giant peeled pieces of brass. it was either that or the amax subs, not sure which.

they sure do thump.

this was on a 10" plate hanging on chains.

the ground was absolutely littered with splash and copper jacket pieces under neath it. the larger pieces of shaving looked like banana peel slices. and i mean like >1" peices

Same results but at 48 yds. I also have one of a barnes that tried to go between 2 plates that were side by side. Awesome...

I got some new AR500 steel in and shot it this weekend.
My subsonic 300blk took out large chunks of it, looks like craters.

We shot at least 200+ normal 55g .223 at it and none of it even left a mark.

The 300blk loads were 220g nosler hpbt at about 1050 fps.

Is this normal?

Have not experienced that with AR500 although I do not shoot my rifles at it inside of 100m. Proclaimed AR500 quality is sometimes a bit sketchy depending on where it comes from (not truly AR500 or was cut improperly). True AR500 should be fine at those speeds. Jacketed .223/5.56 is usually the round within 100m or so that will crater even good quality AR500. Most reputable AR500 manufacturers/suppliers do not recommend shooting high velocity rounds inside 100-150m. At 1050fps the Noslers should be fine if it's quality AR500 and you aren't getting crazy close...inside 50-75m or so.

That doesn't sound right at all. I've shot AR500 steel plates with 308 at 50 yards. Didn't leave nothing but a bunch of scratches. Minor pitting. Less than 5.56. Something isn't right if you are having chunks and craters from the plate. What manufacturer?

Doesn't sound like you got AR500 like you paid for. I have several AR500 targets and even M855 does nothing but a small scratch from the steel core. My 300BLK subs or supers don't leave anything more than an impact "spot". I am not sure how to "verify" AR500 steel, but you may have a bad batch (or mis-labeled).
