300 14.5 with a carbine gas system

Post by Anthony45 »

Howdy all. OK just need a little clarification. Iam looking at a 14.5 BLK barrel with a carbine gas system. I will not be running a suppressor or subsonic ammo will I be OK with this set up? And would I have to open the gas port for it to run properly? I was looking at a m4 profile 300 BLK from Satern. Any help would be grateful.....

Someone will probably chime in on this topic but it is my understanding that a carbine system is no good with a 14.5" or anything BELOW 16". Do a Google search on 300blktalk 14.5 carbine and see if you can find those threads/posts. Good luck :)

It may be ok supersonic only.

Gas port should be wide open.

They shouldn't have made a barrel that way though.

You want a pistol gas port location.

The reason is because the .300AAC was built to do its business in the first 8" or so and the case's internal volume is less - about 5 grains H2O on average. The BO generally uses is smaller powder charges which means less total gas volume, AND since that gas is "evacuating" down a .30 caliber bore versus a .22 caliber bore, pressure drops MUCH faster with each inche of bullet travel.

If you think you will EVER want to run subsonic loads, which means 20K psi range, you will want a pistol port. Even with the added back pressure of a suppressor mounted you may not get reliable cycling with a carbine port in the 14.5"...but you might, and you might play with opening the port a bit.

If you KNOW you only care about running top, supersonic loads then you can probably do just fine with the 14.5" with carbine gas port.

Hope this helps in your decision tree.

What about this?

http://www.cmmginc.com/product_p/30d8a0a.htm

It's "only" 12.5" but it requires no more paperwork than a 14.5". Also, in 300 Blackout 12.5" is superior to 14.5" in .223. And the price is right.

I assume people pin 14.5s to 16.

With the 5.56 you can stick a standard flash hider on a 14.5" barrel and bring it up to 16" to keep it "legal."

With a 12.5" BO barrel you'd need to find a 3.5" "add on" to bring it up to legal. If you start with 16" then add anything you're around 2" beyond "legal." for not other reason than you added a flash suppressor.
