They have different uses, but I don't like the weight of a 308 AR except when I need it, which is not usually.

This was on there and is good info if it is accurate.


Look at it this way.

A .308 winchester 110gr Hornady TAP leaves a 24 inch barrel at 3165fps and by 250 yards ts at about 2370fps and at 825 yards is running around 300ft lbs of energy and 1109 fps

a 300 AAC Blackout 110gr Barnes Vortx leaves a 16 inch barrel at 2350 fps at about 575 yards is 300ft lbs of energy and 1111 fps


It doesn't have the range of a .308 but it still packs a lot of power into a smaller lighter package that is compatible with every part of the AR15 platform Minus the barrel.




That is the info I remembered but I couldn't find. I've been saying for a while, Anything you can shoot with a .308, you can shoot with a 300BLK, just not from as far away! Now we know how much . 250 Yards And that is with a barrel 8"s longer.

I like having both. Just like I have a framing hammer AND a sledge hammer. Sure, the sledge could hammer in a nail, but sure would make a mess doing it.

It amazes me the people that talk about the 5,56 as a poodle shooter on one thread, then the next one they poo poo on the 300blk because their 5,56 with 77 SMK is almost as good yadda yadda.

I have currently downsized and only own 4 rifle calibers. After having shot the 300blk, it will certainly be one of my keeper cartridges.

308 is an outstanding caliber....however in the AR it is waaaay too much. AR was designed to be a compact toting rifle and the 308 caliber takes away from that....not to mention anyone can take their 556 AR and rebarrel it for as little as 200 bucks and have a standout caliber in 300aac. How easy is that to do with a 308 AR? Can a 308 AR hold 30 rds, in a regular AR mag. When it comes to versatility, mobility, sound levels, and even round prce, the blackout is hard to beat.

those figures are cherry picked start comparing numbers with something like a 168 grain boat tail hollow point and it wont even be close . I own a rock river 20 inch 308 and would not get rid of it for anything . yes its heavy , thats why they make slings it is also heavy duty when it comes time to lay down some lead and make cover into concealment , but it wont cycle sub-sonic ammo so that is how and why I come to own a 300 black out. for me they are both different tools that excel at there job .

Wut? The first AR was a .308. It was designed to handle a .308.

I am not knocking a 308 ar, however, what was the reasoning for making the 556 AR?

You could tote twice as many cartridges in 5.56 than .308. Army did studies in the '50s about how fire fights were won; came down to the side that had the most lead in the air usually won. So it was firepower, and more firepower. 'Nam in the late 60's, standard combat load was 420 rounds. If they were headed into Indian Country, add another couple of hundred. Plus 7.62 for the M60 and maybe a couple of motar rounds. And a gallon of water.

I wouldn't say those numbers are cherry picked. Best apples to apples comparison in awhile. Both figures are of 110 grain bullets. It clearly says the .308 has superior ballistics, but it does it at 8" longer barrel. The BLK matches it at distance, just not as far away. Of course if you put a 168 bthp in there it will win but this was a 110 grain comparison. I don't think there is an argument that the .308 even in an AR is obsolete, just pointing out the benefits of the BLK AR.
