Not true I have found some factory loaded ammo that can push a 150 grain bullet north of 2100 FPS and I have found a few reloads with 150 grain that can go beyond that.300Blk wrote:No, 30-30 cannot do that from a 16 inch barrel. 30-30 pushes a 150 grain bullets at the same speed that 300 BLK pushes a 125.
Elk Hunting with the 300 BLK. What bullet would you choose?

My first elk (a 6x6) took a 30-06 in the shoulder dropped and sprang back up, it took me 7 hours to track him and another two shots to bring him down. Upon field dressing him I found that the rounds had split his shoulder in half and deflected in towards his ribs where it lodged. I am not saying that they can't be taken with a blackout, but I would not take the chance of losing one; specially since I no longer live in CO. Now it would be an expensive trip to hunt an elk so I would lean toward one of these three in order of pref, 30-06, .308, .270; nothing smaller.

To answer the original question, have never elk hunted and going off a little research, I think I would use a 270gr .375 Barnes TSX bullet. Out of a .375 H&H Mag
I figure I would be in bear country so I would bring enough gun to easily whack a bear bear which would be enough to whack an elk hunt
Now to buy a .375 H&H Mag

.30-06 with a 165 grain softpoint.
If I could only have one rifle it would be the .30-06.
My .30-06 loves that load and its not going fast at all, its very accurate out of my old Savage 110.
Shot placement is going to be king. Even then its not always certain.
If all you have is the Black then a 150 grain expanding plastic/lead tip bullet. Keep your shot max at 200 yards and place your shot where it NEEDS to go. You will do fine.

"Of course I'm carrying a gun. It's where I keep my bullets".

The blk can take every animal in North America, with the exception of grizzly and polar bear. Elk and bison are borderline. Africa is a different story. 338 lapua ought to be sufficient for that continent and every other for that matter. Just mho.

+1 for shot placement and you'll be fine.
I personally would keep it under 100 yards but would seriously consider a 200 yard shot with a hand loaded TAC-TX. Longer than a 200 yard shot? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

I dunno about elk, but apparently works great on bison.

200 gr Lapua subsonic in the spine or the temple. Can you get within 50 yds?
